Mother's Day

The Jewish proverb above was written on a bookmark given to me by my son on Mother’s Day many years ago. These words really resonate with me still and the bookmark has a special place in both my wallet and memory. On Sunday I will spend time with my Mum, sisters and our families. These celebrations are very special, and I hope all our mums and mother figures have a wonderful day on Sunday.

We look forward to welcoming all the Mums and Nans to our Mother’s Day Breakfast tomorrow morning. There will be food and hot drinks available thanks to our P & F Fathering group. It is fitting that Mother’s Day in Australia is celebrated in the month of May, when in the church we honour Mary, the mother of Jesus and mother to us all.

Raising Resilient Children

Raising Resilient Children

On Tuesday evening we hosted a Raising Resilient Children workshop which was presented by Helping Minds. It was pleasing to have over 30 parents in attendance. Some of the takeaways from this were the importance of:

  • recognising emotions and how to articulate what you think and feel about yourself
  • allowing children to stay in an emotive state for a time rather than immediately intervene and rescue them
  • routine (particularly bedtime)
  • exercise
  • healthy diet
  • breathing exercises to deescalate a situation and calm the mind and body
  • mindfulness - calming the mind, meditation
  • anxiety separation

Many of the topics mentioned affirm what we are doing as a school in the wellbeing space. We know that our children need skills to face life’s challenges and hope in something greater than themselves, for Catholics this is God.

The following mindfulness resources were also recommended:

  2. Reach Out’s Breathe2Relax
  3. Bedtime Explorer’s Podcast

Cross Country Carnival

Next Friday 19th May is our cross-country carnival. Unfortunately if children are absent and hence unable to participate they cannot take part in the interschool carnival. Thank you to those parents who have offered to help on the day.

Confirmation

Our Year 6 students making their confirmation will participate in a parent/student workshop this evening facilitated by Mario Borg from 24/7 Youth Ministry. Please continue to keep these students and their families in your thoughts and prayers.

Change to our Kiss & Drive

For our Capital Development Plan to progress further, a traffic engineer is required to assess the impact on traffic flow of closing the teacher car park. The recommendation is that we modify our current Kiss & Drive arrangements to identify the impact of traffic flow and congestion.

From Monday 15th May the following will be in place for a two-week trial:

Church Kiss & Drive

  • Same way traffic morning and afternoon.
  • Entry only from Parkside Ramble morning and afternoon.
  • Cars exit left onto Duffy Tce only.
  • If wanting to turn right, turn left and use the roundabout.

Upper Car Park Kiss & Drive

  • Enter from Duffy Terrace as per usual.
  • Left lane is for drive through bypass only.
  • Right lane is for pick up and drop off of students.

This will allow cars to enter into the left lane when they have dropped children and continue to the exit on Duffy Terrace.

  • Cars can turn either left or right on Duffy Tce from the Upper Car Park.

Please see map below for clarification.

There will be extra staff on duty to assist with these new arrangements. At the end of the two-week trial the traffic engineer will again assess the Kiss n Drop impact on traffic flow.

Please ensure you pass this information onto anyone that drops off or picks up your children. Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow at the Mother’s Day Breakfast and assembly.

Performing Arts Festival 2023

Year 3 & 5 Dance

This year, the Year 3 & 5 dance students will be performing an item at the Catholic Performing Arts Festival. Thank you to those parents who have volunteered their time to help organise and make the costumes for this year. In our discussions, a fantastic idea was brought up to get a second use out of the old uniforms. Our plan is to make a skirt using the girls blue pinafore dresses. If you have one lying around and would like to donate it, please bring it either directly to the dance hall or to the front office. A massive thank you to those people who have already donated theirs. I really appreciate your support.

If would like to watch these dance students perform, tickets will be on sale from July 19, 2023.

We are looking forward to a wonderful festival this year.

Message from the P&F

Locavora Canteen

We were off to a great start with 191 orders on the first day of our new canteen service! Just a few reminders:

** Canteen is only on Thursdays, and only for LUNCH. You will still need to supply crunch and sip and recess as per normal.

** The system has a glitch that reverts you to being in Preprimary Blue - if you can just double check your child's class and ensure you haven't been affected by this.

Orders are via the Locavora website at https://schools.locavora.com.au All instructions to set up your account, load funds and order are on their website. Please reach out to the P&F if you require any further assistance, at parentsstlukes@outlook.com.

Orders must be in by 8.30am on the day (Thursdays for Term 2). Late orders and cancellations can be made up to 10am on the day, via the Locavora direct number 9481 4500

We are ironing out the delivery process and from Thursday 18th onwards we will be organising a roster for volunteers. Details to follow. Volunteers should only be needed for a short time starting just before 12.45pm. Hopefully, this new delivery system will be a lot less work and we will be able to source sufficient volunteers to allow the canteen service to continue unlike previous efforts that proved unsustainable due to volunteer fatigue.

Looking forward to some full tummies, very happy kids, and hopefully many happy parents!

Mother's Day

Don't forget our Mother's Day morning is on tomorrow 12th May, from 7:30am.

At 8:20am you will be invited in to your child's classroom, followed by the pre-primary assembly at 8:40am that you are welcome to attend.

Children are also permitted to bring some gold coins in a Ziploc bag (up to $5) to spend at the Mother's Day stall which has been organised by our Year 5s.

Don't forget to bring along a bag for the children to pop the presents into.

Wishing all our St Luke's mums and mother figures, a very Happy Mother's Day on Sunday.
