CARLSBAD UNIFIED CONNECTIONS
NEWSLETTER - SEPTEMBER 2019
Welcome to our first newsletter!
Carlsbad Unified parents, caregivers, teachers, staff, students, and community: welcome to the 2019-20 school year.
Thank you for taking a look at our inaugural edition of Carlsbad Unified Connections. The purpose of this monthly newsletter is to share some of the great things happening in our schools. Each month, we’ll highlight several school sites in our “Spotlight on Schools” section; we’ll take you inside a campus in our “A Visit To…” section; and we’ll share a few selected images in our “Favorite Social Media Posts” section. I'll also include a "Superintendent's Message" each month.
On behalf of our Board of Trustees and our team at the District Office, thank you for your support of our 11,500 students in Carlsbad Unified School District. Together, we’re doing great things for kids!
Sincerely,
Dr. Ben Churchill
Superintendent

Superintendent's Message
Innovation. Finding new ways to do things to get better results. It takes perseverance, grit, and hard work over time to take something that is already good and make it even better. We aim to do that here at Carlsbad Unified.
We’ve got a lot to be proud of. Our schools are recognized as California Distinguished Schools and National Blue Ribbon Award schools. Sage Creek and Carlsbad High Schools are consistently ranked among the best in California and the nation. Carlsbad educators are regularly honored for excellence.

Spotlight on Schools: Calavera Hills Elementary School
“CHE has a great parent community, and we are always striving to further cultivate our partners in education,” said Principal Kimberly Fuentes. And the school offers lots of opportunities for parents to get involved in their children’s education. At Parent Education Nights, parents hear and share ideas for helping their students navigate homework or sharpen their skills with game-based learning. Coffees with the Principal (Cafecitos), held throughout the year, provide a forum for Spanish-speaking families to discuss topics such as school progress and social-emotional wellness. Also, CHE has seen increased participation in its parent-led art program, Art in Action. Parent docents lead classroom art lessons, culminating in an art show at the end of the year.

SPOTLIGHT ON SCHOOLS: CALAVERA HILLS MIDDLE SCHOOL
This year CHMS’s over-arching goal is communication—in all directions. This means training students to solve problems collaboratively in groups, and building bridges to the community so students have access to added resources they can learn from. It also means giving students experience in speaking effectively in front of an audience—and not only becoming an effective speaker but learning to be an active listener as well.
