Worthington Kilbourne Weekly News
Week of November 15, 2021
Dear Kilbourne Family,
School attendance is vitally important and we encourage daily attendance for our students. There are times throughout the year where school absences are unavoidable, such as being sick or taking a college visit. We ask that our parents pause to think about the absences that may be avoidable and try to keep students in school as much as possible. It is difficult to recreate the activities and discussions that enrich the learning for a student when they miss school. The assignments can be given but sometimes the students will never be able to get the full experience of the classroom when they miss. Parents are reminded of the following reasons for an excused absence:
- personal illness (a written physician's statement verifying the illness may be required)
- appointment with a health care provider
- illness in the family necessitating the presence of the child
- quarantine of the home
- death in the family
- necessary work at home due to absence or incapacity of parent(s)/guardian(s)
- observation or celebration of a bona fide religious holiday
- such good cause as may be acceptable to the Superintendent
- medically necessary leave for a pregnant student in accordance with Policy 5751
- service as a precinct officer at a primary, special or general election in accordance with the program set forth in Policy 5725
If a student has a planned absence where the student may miss three or more days, we ask for the Extended Absence Form to be completed and submitted for review ahead of the absence. This form is available in Student Services.
The Worthington City School District believes daily attendance is a foundational piece of a student’s academic success. In creating an environment for that academic success, the district works with students and their parents/guardians to encourage consistent ongoing attendance. More information on District Policy 5200 - Attendance can be found here [click on Section 5000 Students, then scroll down to 5200 Attendance].
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Aric Thomas, Principal / athomas@wscloud.org / 614-450-6400

Guidelines from the Health Office: When to keep a student home from school
As we return to a normal schedule with all students attending school daily it is extremely important NOT to send your student to school if they are sick and not feeling well. A daily health check is required for parents and students to complete each morning prior to school.
Daily Home COVID-19 "Before School" Screening
Guidance for Daily Home Screening
If your child develops or reports any of the symptoms listed below during the school day they will be isolated and a parent or guardian will be called for immediate pick up. Follow-up with a health care provider will be required for your student to return to school. The COVID-19 protocols will be strictly enforced to ensure a healthy environment for our students and staff.
Your child needs to be kept home if any of the following symptoms are present.
Temperature 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher when taken by mouth
New or worsened cough
New-onset severe headache
Loss of taste or smell
Sore throat

A message from Principal Thomas
Dear Kilbourne Family,
We thank you and your family for being our valued partners as we work together to educate your child(ren) in our district.
You recently received information about your child(ren) being asked to participate in an online Social Emotional Learning (SEL) survey.
New this year, we are asking families to participate in the Family-School Relationships Survey, a 20-minute survey, where you have the chance to tell us about your experiences with us as a school district. We want to better understand you and your families’ needs so that we continue to provide high quality, rigorous learning experiences that meet the needs of all our students.
We are partnering with Panorama Education, a third-party vendor, to support us in administering this survey. This is the same partner that administers our student SEL surveys.
The survey shouldn’t take more than 20 minutes to complete and will also be administered during the same two-week window as the student surveys -- from November 8 - November 19, 2021.
Please note the following:
You will NOT need an access code. Once the survey is live on November 8, you will be able to just click the link to access the survey.
You will not be able to “stop and save” your responses. So, please set aside a time where you can complete the survey in one sitting.
If you have children at multiple schools, you will have to take a survey for each school.
Please click here to view the flyer with more details.
Respectfully,
Aric Thomas, Principal
Delaware Area Career Center Open House / Thursday, Dec. 2 / 4:30 - 7:30 pm
To better manage the flow of visitors in the building, this year's open house will be broken down into two sessions, or two "waves" of guests. Each student may be accompanied by one guest/parent. Families will be asked to pre-register for one of the two sessions: 4:30-6:00, or 6:00-7:30 p.m. Open House info can be found here.

Parents of Class of 2022 / Cap & Gown order reminder
Parents of the Class of 2022: Production and shipping times are slowing down the supply of our caps and gowns for the Class of 2022, so it would be extremely helpful if orders could be placed early rather than waiting until the last minute. The final "last minute" deadline for all orders will be January 31st, to ensure cap & gown delivery well before the ceremony on May 22, 2022 at Noon in the Greater Columbus Convention Center in downtown Columbus.
Note: if your graduate was hoping to wear a sibling's gown from 2020 or earlier, our company will exchange the older cap and gown for the new style when you purchase the 2022 tassel or cap and tassel. On the Buckeye Scholastic website, scroll down to Questions & Answers for details about trading in an older gown.
