Teeland Middle School
April 2022
Letter from the Principal
To Our Teeland Families:
A big thank you goes out to the families that supported our school during the mandated statewide AK STAR testing requirement. We had a record number of students take their time on the test and give their best effort. The testing information is used as a data point for class placement and referrals for additional support. State testing is important and opting out contributes to inaccurate information about our school and less information about your student for class placement.
We will have MAP, Measures of Academic Progress, testing April 18-21, 2022. This information is also used to better understand our school performance and to make decisions for planning to meet the needs of your students. MAP testing is equally important as AK STAR. Thank you in advance for supporting us by having your student at school and doing their best on those days.
Please take advantage of the below opportunities if your student is struggling to keep up:
1. After school Study Hall, 2:30-3:30, every Tuesday and Thursday. The office has permission slips.
2. Lunch Study Hall is available Monday-Thursday for both A and B lunches.
3. Math lab is available on Wednesdays during seventh period and after school until 3:30. There are permission slips available in the front office.
Contact your student’s school counselor to plan for success if needed.
On May 19th, our eighth grade students will be having an assembly and BBQ/picnic to celebrate their advancement to high school. We will record this event and have it available for parent viewing. This will be the last day of school for our eighth grade students. Sixth and seventh grade students will have their last day on May 20th.
Your students continue to impress and bring joy to our school! Teamwork with our TMS families is the key to having a great quarter four! Let’s finish strong!!
Mrs. Hinds, TMS Principal

TMS Students Attend the Innovation Summit in Juneau!
The TMS First Lego League Team “Robolutions” went attended the Innovation Summit in Juneau hosted by the Juneau Economic Development Corporation. The team presented their innovative solution to improve supply chain issues surrounding shipping. The team purposed a self-driving electric shipping container that would be an all in one shipping container that could drive on and off the ships as well as deliver goods to businesses. The team did a great job presenting their idea, and received a lot of positive praise from business leaders and educators in Juneau. During the summit the team also learned a lot of innovative business and science solutions going on around the state such as carbon/ methane capture and improving renewable energy infrastructure. On the trip the team also toured the state capital, witnessed the legislative budget and audit committee in action, and meet our local state representative and senator. The team also toured the NOAA facilities automated water supply system, Treadwell Mine, UAS campus, Electric Bus (Capital transit), Lynden Cargo, Mendenhall Glacier, Museum/ Library/ Archives, and hiked through an old growth forest.
