Mrs. Caldwell's Classroom

Weekly Hellos
Everyone came in so excited and full of talk about winter break adventures this morning. I swear that everyone grew a foot while they were away from each other! We are starting the new year and second semester. Things are going to start moving fast now.
As a reminder, please DO NOT USE the STAAR released test from T.E.A. We will use that to analyze what areas your child will need support in so any prior work skews our data.
Thanks so much!
Various Things to Read and Respond To
Round Rock Area Serving Center Field Trip
Our field trip to the RR Serving Center is coming up later this month. We are taking any and all monetary donations at this time. I know that some of you sent money before the break. The suggested amount is $3 per child but we will take any and all donations to support our community party and PBL sponsor.

Science Fair Topic Wizard is a great resource to go ahead and start thinking about the project you want to do this year for science fair. It's not required in third but I highly encourage EVERYONE IN MY CLASS to participate. It's good for your brain!!
If you are interested in being a science fair judge, please contact Danica Baker at danica_baker@roundrockisd.org.

Homework News
Reading will also change over to time to give students more practice with comprehension questions and writing.
Class Events
Writing Workshop- Students will begin a new 3 week unit on fantasy writing. We'll take what we know about fiction stories and add in protagonists (heroes), goals (something to achieve), obstacles (things that block the hero from achieving the goal) and consequences (what happens at the end when the goal is/isn't met).
Grammar- We will be revisiting complete sentences this week with an emphasis on finding the subjects and predicates. We'll use examples from literature, our own writings, and from a great interactive app called Nearpod. After this review, we'll concentrate on how to combine sentences.
Math- We are finishing our final week of geometry. We are reviewing lots of vocabulary (see the Geometry Review in Google Classroom for reminders) and we are exploring finding the area of irregular polygons by creating friendly quadrilaterals. All Prodigy HW is about geometry this week.
Social Studies: We are revisiting our past goals and trying to write S.M.A.R.T. goals for this nine weeks. This is an acronym for thinking about and making goals that are Specific, Measureable, (have) Action, (are) Realistic, and (are) Timely for this nine weeks.
We are using Google Docs to do this.
