A Note from Mrs. Burke
From Mrs. Burke
Hang in there everyone, it will warm up and we will see the grass again! With spring coming, it is school election time. LaMotte School will be asking the voters to approve a levy for our general fund. The general fund is where the money comes from to pay the staff, purchase supplies, heat and light the building, and basically run the school, day to day. The general fund is a combination of money from the state and federal governments (80%) and from you, our local taxpayers and is heavily based on enrollment. We will be asking for less than $9,000. With the support from our voters, this levy will give us about $3,000 more in spending authority than last year, which isn’t much for a $600,000+ budget. Thanks in advance for voting. You will receive your ballots through the mail.
The spring school election is also the time trustees are elected for the LaMotte School Board. The three year term of two of our trustees will be expiring. Mr. Ken Miller has decided to run again as a trustee and our long time board chairperson and board member, Mrs. Amy Allen has decided that after 12 years, she is ending her time as a trustee. So that leaves us with an open spot. If you are interested in running for the board, please pick up the necessary paperwork from Mrs. Clark in the office. You will need to file by March 28. Thanks for considering this service to our school and community.
I am excited to let you know, too that for the first time ever at LaMotte, we will hire our own special education teacher. We have always shared a teacher, Mrs. Heath, with other rural schools through the special education cooperative. After serving LaMotte for 24 years, Mrs. Heath is retiring. We will miss her, but wish her all the best in her next adventure! Our new special education teacher will work with all students that need some help in reading or math. The position is advertised currently and we are hoping to have someone hired by the end of April to begin in the fall.
Spring is also the time for our annual Art Auction and Spring Choir Concert! The auction is our funding source for the art program at LaMotte. The proceeds from the auction pay for the artists from Art Splot to teach at our school. Without that funding, students would not receive the quality instruction that they do now. If you are interested in volunteering to help organize this fun, important event, please let me know. Thank you!
I wish you all a restful and rejuvenating Spring Break, March 18-22!
