Jesmond Public School
Jesmond Journal Term 2 Week 6, 31st May 2023
Principal's Message
Public Speaking
Next week, all students K-6 will deliver their speeches to their class. Three students from each class will qualify to deliver their speech at a Stage level competition in the school hall towards the end of term. This is where two students will then be chosen to represent the school at the Hunter Inter-school's Primary Public Speaking Competition in Term 3.
Cricket NSW Program
We have been lucky enough to receive a grant from Cricket NSW to have experienced cricket coaches teach our students for Health & PE. All students from K-6 will participate in a four-week curriculum-aligned program that is fun and exciting for students of all abilities. The program aims to fulfill the development of gross motor and movement skills and improve the participation rates in Cricket across NSW.
University of Newcastle PE Skills Program
After five amazing weeks, our PE Skills Program with the University Students has ended. We appreciate the effort they put into the lessons each week. Our students practised their catching, running, hopping, skipping, and throwing skills in a range of engaging games and activities. Jesmond Public School students displayed immense growth in their fundamental movement skills, and we can't wait to participate in this amazing program again in 2024.
Great Aussie Bush Camp
We are so excited to be heading to The Great Aussie Bush Camp next Wednesday. 40 Year 3-6 students will be participating in a range of activities from canoeing, flying foxes, rock climbing and much more.
Students have received an additional note today with further clarification about times and items to bring to camp. Please ensure all items are clearly labelled.
Any final monies owing and medications should be bought to the office by Thursday 1st June 2023.
We would like to thank the P&C for their generous donation to keep the cost of the excursion down.
Stage 2 Virtual Excursion
Last Friday, Year 3 participated in a virtual excursion lead by the NSW State Library about ‘The First Fleet’. During the excursion, we examined primary sources about how the convicts lived, including what they ate, what they wore and the jobs that they were required to do. Year 3 got a great insight into what life was like for the convicts that settled in Australia and have used this knowledge to write their own ‘letters as a convict’ during writing lessons.
School Uniforms
Wearing a school uniform give students a sense of pride and belonging. Please ensure the correct school uniform is worn each day. As we move into the cooler months please label jumpers and jackets so they can be easily returned. Hats are now available from the Uniform Shop for $15 cash.
Attendance
There has been an increase in whole school attendance across K -6 this term. Thank you to both our students, parents and carers for explaining absences and responding to SMS and staff phone calls. If any obstacles are preventing your child from attending school, please contact class teachers or myself. We are all committed to attendance. Each child matters!
GRIP Leadership Conference
Last week, Miss Robertson and the school leaders went to the Civic Theatre to attend Grip Leadership. Students had a wonderful day exploring how they can have a positive impact by embracing leadership opportunities. The students participated in a variety of games and activities around identifying qualities that make them great leaders. Hamish was selected to go on stage and won a leadership badge.
Have a wonderful week!

National Walk to School Day
On Wednesday 24th May, Jesmond Public School participated in National Walk to School Day. This annual event encourages all primary school children to walk and commute safely to school.
This event is a great opportunity for schools and families to encourage safe road user behaviours, not just one day but every day. As students arrived in the morning, they received a school scavenger hunt checklist which required them to walk around the school, find teachers and greet them with one of our Jesmond Public School greetings. Students were very enthusiastic and excited to be a part of the event. It was an extremely fun morning for everyone.
Term 2 Gardening
Every Wednesday, students have been watering, planting and caring for our school garden. They are excited to see what might grow from their magic seed paper and we are hoping to see sunflowers soon.
