Principal's Message

Dear Terra Linda Families,

Thank you for encouraging your students to participate in a voting experience. Tomorrow morning during morning meetings in each class, teachers will play a video announcing the name of our Tiger. I wanted to thank the PTC for purchasing a Tiger Mascot for our school. Once we are able to return to regular community gatherings, be on the lookout for our Tiger!

If your family missed the assembly last week, a link is posted in the Wellness class in Seesaw. We will continue to post a link in the Wellness class for each of our monthly assemblies during CDL.

I also wanted to thank the PTC for purchasing a Terra Linda T-shirt for all of our new students. We have been distributing T-shirts to our Kindergarteners and all students new to Terra Linda this year. The PTC also provided funds for our staff to purchase Terra Linda Staff gear as well. Thank you! All students and staff are invited to wear Terra Linda gear to our next assembly on November 20!

We are encouraging all students to complete at least one Dreambox lesson each day. Dreambox provides students with wonderful visual models of different math concepts. It also supports the development of mental math strategies. Dreambox also adjusts the tasks it gives to each student based on how they answer each question. Therefore, it's important that grown-ups don't provide help with entering the correct answers; otherwise, Dreambox will provide problems that could cause your child a lot of frustration because they are too difficult. When students enter wrong answers, Dreambox will adjust the level of problems and/or the type of problems to help build the skills the student needs to answer correctly in the future. If you child is struggling with a particular problem, encourage them to make their best guess, even if it is wrong. Then celebrate with your child. Mistakes are where we learn the most!

Here are a few tips when supporting your students on Dreambox:

  • Celebrate mistakes
  • Ask questions if your child is stuck: What is the problem asking you to do? What have you tried? Have you clicked on all of the options? What do you think the answer could be? Go ahead and enter that.
  • Avoid providing paper & pencil to solve problems. All problems should be able to be solved using mental math strategies. If you need paper, it's probably too hard. And it's okay to answer incorrectly so Dreambox will adjust to an easier problem.
  • Watch this video for more ideas: https://youtu.be/GLY8V5w0rvk

Dreambox is designed to provide students with productive struggle: not too hard but not too easy. If you've provided help to your child and feel like the math problems are now too difficult, contact your child's teacher. We can reset the grade level if needed.

Be sure to notice the unique schedule next week: No School Wednesday in observance of Veteran's Day. Friday is an Assessment Day for teachers, so there is no school for students. We will run a regular school schedule on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.

Even though we have a different schedule next week, the Tooth Taxi will be at Terra Linda! If any of your children are needing to see a Dentist, please contact the Tooth Taxi at 503-329-8877. Appointment times are still available!

Finally, I am holding a Principal Chat tonight on Zoom at 6:30 pm. All parents/guardians are welcome to join. I will begin by sharing a few updates and then provide time for anyone to ask questions. Thank you for partnering with us this fall!

Holiday Assistance for Families

Terra Linda typically runs a food drive in November and then offers Food Boxes to Terra Linda families who request a box. When families picked up their food box, they also received a grocery gift card from our PTC to help them supplement meals over the long Thanksgiving Break.

This year, due to COVID-19, we have decided not to collect food for redistribution. This is for safety reasons but also because there are many opportunities in our community to get a weekly food box, either by drive through pick up or by delivery. See below for a list. The Terra Linda PTC would still like to support Terra Linda families who need additional items over the Thanksgiving Break.

Winter Break is another time when families might need additional support. Every year, we offer families a delivery of food and gifts for the upcoming Winter Break by connecting families to local agencies. We are offering this opportunity this year, too.

Please call us at Terra Linda at 503.356.2490 anytime between now and Friday, November 20 to request assistance for either Thanksgiving Break, Winter Break, or both.

School Pictures Are Coming!

School picture day will be Monday, November 30 from 2:00pm to 7:00pm. You will be able to reserve a time. Details to come soon!

A Message for Students:

School Profiles Now Available

Our 2019-20 school profile is posted on our school webpage under About Us>School Profile>Oregon Report Card. There is also a link on this page to school profiles for other years and other schools. The 2019-20 district profile is posted on the district report card webpage.

State report cards began when the 1999 Oregon Legislature passed a law requiring every public school and district to receive a report from the Oregon Department of Education about how they are performing overall. The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), signed by President Obama on December 10, 2015, replaces the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act and affords states greater flexibility. ESSA encourages schools and educators to innovate and create systems that address local needs. As a part of this work, the Oregon Department of Education redesigned the School and District report cards to engage and inform families about their school’s approach to learning, academic and extracurricular offerings, and student performance. Reports cards also serve as an important tool for continuous improvement planning by local and state policymakers, in conjunction with the communities they serve.

The 2019-20 school and district profiles do not include statewide assessments data, class size data, or attendance data as a result of the necessary statewide school closures and the implementation of Distance Learning for All. The profiles present all available data not impacted by the state’s response to COVID-19.

At Terra Linda, we are committed to using this information to help tailor our school improvement plans and academic programs to meet the needs of every student. You’ll find our current plan here: School Learning Plan

If you have questions about our report card or would like a print copy, please contact me. You may also have suggestions for improvements. Please share them!

Thank you,

Christy

The Tooth Taxi will be at Terra Linda, November 9-13 for Free Dental Care - Call Today for an Appointment! 503-329-8877

The Dental Foundation of Oregon’s mobile dental van the Tooth Taxi is coming! They will be parked at Terra Linda Elementary School, November 9th-13th to treat our families. Not operating on Wednesday, November 11 for Veteran's Day.

  • The Tooth Taxi is staffed by dental professionals and offers a range of dental services including exams, cleanings, sealants, fillings and simple extractions for FREE.

  • The health and safety of our patients and staff is always our highest priority. Our Mobile Program is following the most recent infection control recommendations made by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and The Oregon Health Authority (OHA). We’re closely following the activities of these agencies to stay current with any new protocols and best practice guidance that may be issued.
  • Registration in advance is needed, and a patient consent and information form must be completed. Contact Carrie Peterson at 503-329-8877 to make an appointment.

Immunizations & Flu

A reminder from our School Nurse:

Please ensure your child is up to date on all immunizations. Any child not up to date will be excluded from school on exclusion day in February until immunizations are complete. Please contact your health care provider and start any "catch-up" now. Vaccines are also available through Virginia Garcia and Neighborhood Health School Based Health Centers, or find another location at https://vaccinefinder.org/

Be a Flu Fighter this year! Cold and flu season has arrived, and this is a great time to get your flu vaccines. There are many flu vaccine options to choose from, but the most important thing is that all people 6 months and older get a flu vaccine every year. Talk with your provider about which flu vaccine is best for you and your children.

Take everyday actions to stop the spread of germs. Wash your hands often with soap and water, cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and wash your hands often with soap and water. If you become sick, limit your contact with others to keep from infecting them.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I can also provide you with additional resources about vaccinations and other health topics. alexandria_wesenberg@beaverton.k12.or.us

Eat, Sleep, Move! Tips from Zandi, Our School Nurse

Healthy habits and routines are important to manage and improve both mental and physical wellness, even when students are participating in Comprehensive Distance Learning. Healthy eating, sleeping and exercise are linked with improvements in behavior, attention, mood, safety, school performance and attendance, and boosting immune systems. Here are a few tips:

Nutrition

Sleep

  • According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, to promote optimal health:

    • Children 3-5 years old should sleep 10-13 hours per 24 hours

    • Children 6-12 years old should sleep 9-12 hours

    • Teenagers 13-18 years old should sleep 8-10 hours

Exercise

Play & Connect with Friends

Sunset High School students will be hosting different activities on Zoom starting the week of November 16. This is an opportunity for Terra Linda students to gather together for some fun and to spend time with friends in other classes. Activities might be a game (such as Bingo or Uno), art, or just a chance just to chat with friends!

When your child signs in at 2:30 on their designated day, they will hear about the different activities they can choose. A Terra Linda staff member will then place them into breakout rooms based on the activity they want to do.

Participation is completely optional. Please encourage your children to participate! See below for Zoom information and days for each grade level.

Consider Registering for "Parenting During the Pandemic"

TAG Nomination Process (Repeat) - Forms Due Friday, November 13

Every year students are considered for Talented and Gifted services in the Beaverton School District. These services are provided by your child's classroom teacher(s). Oregon law and District policy define gifted students as those who score at or above the 97th percentile on a standardized, nationally normed test of mental ability and/or academic achievement in reading and/or math. Behavioral, learning, and/or performance information is also considered before a student is identified for TAG services.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and our current reality of Comprehensive Distance Learning, our evaluation process will look different this year. We will administer in-person TAG testing after January 11, 2021. Until then, teachers will collect evidence on how your student responds to differentiation within their distance learning classroom. This evaluation may include: file reviews, teacher and student observations, a collection of work samples, and/or individual or group assessments. This process may take some time, but every effort will be made to complete the evaluation in a timely manner. Parents will be notified of their school’s in-person testing dates in January.

If you think your child might qualify for TAG services, you may wish to complete the Parent Information Form that is available in our school’s office or linked below. Completing this form gives our school TAG Committee more information about your child, but it is not required. All qualified students will be considered regardless of the form’s completion.

Please complete and return the Parent Information Form to our office at Terra Linda by Friday, November 13. You can drop it off during any of our Grab & Go events, you can send it by mail, or you can send it as an attachment in an email to elizabeth_sarles@beaverton.k12.or.us
