MCCHS Friday Focus
262nd Issue - March 24, 2023
From the Desk of Rev. Charles Warren
You probably have heard that the Sabbath is a day of rest.
Did you know priests are REQUIRED to go on retreat once a year?
It’s true, it has been for a long time. If a priest falls into the trap of becoming a task manager instead of living what a priest truly is, retreats are the proper remedy. To step away from our responsibilities and recognize that we are not the savior of the world no matter how hard we work.
A time of retreat is necessary to keep priorities right and to have freedom. We lose freedom when we think our work is more important than the relationships they serve.
A retreat fights the tendency we have to become attached to our work or other things that get in the way of true happiness.
Our school is about to embark on a time of spring rest after two other substantial moments of retreat at the school.
About 40 seniors left for the (can I say legendary?) senior KAIROS retreat. This retreat has existed for decades and has many stories of conversion, rejuvenation, depth, and grace. While I can’t tell you much about it (nor can any retreatant) let me assure you that the time together is restful, prayerful, and helps our students refocus on what matters most in life. It was a grace filled time, if you see a student with their Kairos cross over their uniform, ask them how it went!
This week we had our all school retreat. A strange thing for a school to decide a whole day will not be spent in class…but we are a Catholic-Preparatory school. This retreat was a reminder that this school only exists because women and men throughout history have beheld the Lamb of God and ordered their lives around Him. If we do not hold to our values and our identity, we cannot succeed in our mission. Students and teachers spent time together mixed in different groups of all grades to hear talks, relax, and pray.
We were particularly grateful to have a whole hour of eucharistic adoration in the main gym, decorated with candles by our students, and led in musical praise by Fr. Keith Romke (St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Crystal Lake) and Jordyn Kratochvil (Class of 2023). It was a beautiful moment of prayer, rest, and community.
Thank you to our campus ministry team of students who led reflections and talks throughout the day, the office staff who covered logistics, and the kitchen team for having meals ready to go! Thank you to all who have worked hard to make this a great Marian community.
Now, go in peace, get some rest, and enjoy spring break!
