Superintendent's Community Update
October 14, 2022
A Message from Superintendent Colleen Burns Jermain, Ed.D.
Dear Newport Parents, Families, and Staff:
It’s hard to learn if your child isn’t in school. That may sound like a rather obvious statement, but it’s true and an important reminder that school attendance is absolutely critical. We track daily attendance at all of our schools. While the numbers have been good, mostly in the 90% attendance range, we need to do better.
So as I’ve shared in this newsletter before, be sure to establish a school day routine with regular bed and wake up hours. This consistency will really help with attendance.
We also know that family vacations, travel, and other circumstances sometimes mean you may have to take your child out of school for a day. That’s understandable, but please keep this to an absolute bare minimum because missing even a few days of class can have big impacts on your child’s learning across the school year. And if your child is missing school, or has not been attending school on a regular basis, something is wrong. Please contact your child’s principal, guidance counselor, or teacher and work with them to help support your child to attend school. We need to work together to help our children be successful.
I’ll be providing periodic updates on attendance in future editions of my community update. Working together, I’m confident we can get daily attendance up to 95% at all of our schools.
I hope everyone has a great week, and our Rogers Vikings have a great homecoming weekend!
Sincerely,
Colleen Burns Jermain, Ed.D.
Superintendent
Sinceramente,
Colleen Burns Jermain, Ed.D.
Superintendente

Regionalization- There is still time to learn more
The November 8th election is coming up fast, including Question 5 on regionalizing Newport and Middletown public schools. As I shared in a recent update, regionalizing would mean Newport receiving 80% facilities cost reimbursement from the state, meaning an additional $46 million dollars on top of the funding reimbursement we’re already scheduled to receive. Please be sure to get the facts and information by visiting the Middletown & Newport Public Schools Regionalization website (middletown-newport.us).
And key election dates to remember:
✔October 18th - Deadline to request a mail ballot
✔October 19th through November 7th - Early voting period
✔November 8th - General election, in-person voting at the polls
✔November 8th at 8pm - Deadline for receipt of mail ballots
Visit http://vote.ri.gov/ for a full election calendar and voting information. 🗳️
One of the questions or wonders that remains is that people are still wondering about the benefits of regionalization. There will be one more joint meeting of the Newport-Middletown School Committees meeting with RIDE on October 27. The location is TBD. As noted above, early voting does start soon, so some may want to hold off if you are on the fence to learn more before deciding on question #5 on the ballot. Right now, the educational benefits from our school districts' perspectives are being gathered together and hopefully ideas shared within the next week. So stay tuned for more information next week.

Save The Date - Parent Teacher Conferences
Get to know your child’s teachers and hear how they’re doing in class by attending upcoming parent-teacher conferences:
● Pell, Friday, December 2 - (12-5 PM) - no school day for Pell students
● Thompson, Thursday, December 1 - (12-5 PM) - no school day for TMS students
● Rogers, Wednesday, November 30- (12-5 PM) - no school day for RHS students
While parent-teacher conferences are coming up in a few weeks, you can contact your child’s principal, guidance counselors, and teachers at any time. They’re eager for parent feedback and ready to address any academic or behavior related questions/concerns you may have. As noted above, if your child is having an attendance problem please contact the schools now so we can work together to support your child.

REMINDER: Returning School Meal Applications Means More Money For Newport Public Schools - Please Return By October 15th!
Free and reduced meals are an important and nutritious option for many of our students. That’s why it is critical that EVERYONE return these applications, even if your family is not eligible. The more completed meal applications we receive, the more resources we have to provide these meals. To date, we have received less than 50% of applications. Let’s get that number way up! Return your school meal application by October 15th!
Reminder: Download the Newport Public Schools App
Over the summer, Newport Public Schools invested in a beautiful new website and a new app designed to keep our entire school community better informed about updates, news, and everything that’s happening in our schools. Please take a moment to download our free Newport Public Schools App so you can get all of this great information on your mobile device.
