Fresh Start/ Best Practices
A new semester, a clean slate - time to put one's best foot forward. Here are a few ideas.
- Practice self-care: in our land of severe cold and darkness, self-care is serious. Take time for yourself and teach your children the importance of doing such for themselves.
- Create Goals - talk with your children about their goals for the upcoming semester. Social, athletic, and educational goals are all important. Once you know them, revisit them frequently and help guide your child to success. (See Mrs. Thrun's message below)
- Time on Task - there few steps as important for success as - time on task. We live in a distractive world. Clarify your child's time so success builds daily.
- Clear Communication - whether it is a phone call, email, text, paper newsletter, school website, Facebook post, or one of the new teacher apps: keep in touch. We need to hear from you to meet your child's needs. Issues caught early are usually corrected quicker.
Stay warm,
Mr. Keener

Assistant Principal's Message
Goals for 2020!
I would like to extend a warm welcome back to our Arctic Light students, staff, and families. I had a joyous holiday break filled with friends, good food, and tons of relaxing rest. My kids and I didn’t make it to the tubing hill as the temperatures kept us close to home. It is one of our yearly goals to get over to our much beloved tubing hill before the melting suns of spring appear.
Speaking of goals, one of the 5 core components of SEL (Social Emotional Learning) is Cognitive Regulation. Cognitive self-regulation are actions or processes that require students to engage in behaviors that help them to learn. One such action is establishing mastery goals for academic learning. Examples of mastery goals would be to learn to play an instrument, master multiplication facts, or read a book at a challenging reading level. Parents can assist by asking their child what goals they are working towards and what strategies they are using to improve their skills. Remember to check in with your child periodically to see how they are progressing toward their mastery goal. The ultimate purpose is for students to understand they have the power to set a goal and achieve anything they set their mind to do. We believe in them!
1. Help your child to choose an academic goal.
2. Talk about the purpose of their goal.
3. Break the goal into smaller steps (if needed).
4. Talk about obstacles that may get in the way.
5. Celebrate success!
See you on the hill!

Counselor Corner
In Life Skills we will be talking about setting goals and taking positive action based on values. There will be discussions about managing strong emotions like anger, the power of one person to improve a situation (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and others), nonviolence, and the saying, “Two wrongs don’t make a right.” Older students will be reflecting about their relative strength areas and interests, and learning about career aspects and options.
