¡Buenos días!

You are receiving this newsletter because you are the parent/guardian of a student that I am currently teaching in Spanish 3 this summer. I'm excited for this summer semester and the opportunity to work with you/your student to help him/her grow more proficient in the Spanish language, improve his/her cultural competence and global understanding!

**PLEASE NOTE: THE COURSE OFFICIALLY STARTED MONDAY, JUNE 18TH. STUDENTS SHOULD SPEND AT LEAST 2 HOURS (maybe more) IN THE COURSE EVERY DAY (Monday-Friday) SINCE THIS IS A FAST-PACED SUMMER COURSE (COMBINING 18 WEEKS INTO 8).**

Each week I will be sending a flyer (SMORE) to let you know what students are doing in Spanish 3 at NCVPS. I will share due dates and other important information.

Students need to print out the Schedule of Assignments, read it carefully, sign it, have a parent sign it, take a snapshot of the signatures and submit it as an assignment. What's due this week?

This week we are working on two units: Getting Started Unit where students work on assignments and learn how to navigate through Moodle and Unit 1, a review of Spanish 2. Students can take the quizzes in Unit 1 as many times as they want in order to get the highest grade.

COMPLETING ASSIGNMENTS AND WORKING AHEAD IN THE CLASS!

The course is formatted in a clear, list format, so that students can quickly and easily move from one item to the next, in the necessary order, as listed, so students should complete assignments in order. For example: finishing Getting Started unit before moving on to Unit 1. If a student finishes his/her week's assignments early, he/she is encouraged to move forward and work ahead! Just make sure to complete *all* assignments, in order, and on time/early!

WHAT IS AN RLC?

Throughout the summer course, students will be responsible for attending 6 live classes. Students will be given several options of sessions for each RLC with a variety of teachers, so that he/she can choose which ones best fit his/her schedule. The RLC course calendar is always available to students by clicking on the Required Live Class icon on the Home Page of the Spanish 3 Canvas class.


Students need to make sure that he/she puts first and last name when entering the session. Students need to take notes during the session (just like in a face-to-face class) and then complete the reflection (a 3-2-1) after attending the session. Each session lasts about an hour.


Students will attend a total of 6 sessions during the semester.

I strongly encourage students to attend the Required Live Classes (RLC), but if a student is unable to attend one of the Required Live Classes, the student can watch the archive for my recorded live class.


I taught my RLC for Getting Started unit Monday night, June 18 @ 8pm. In addition, I will be teaching my RLC for Unit 1 Wednesday night, June 20 @ 8pm.

HOW ARE GRADES CALCULATED?

Grades are automatically updated and available in Canvas 24/7, so there should never be a question about what a student's grade is at any time. All teacher-graded assignments receive detailed feedback. It's critical for the students to check their grades/feedback daily and inquire with the teacher if they don't understand something or feel that there is an error. Assignments not attempted/completed receive a 0 but students can continue to complete assignments. (**See Spanish Late Work Guidelines below.)

If/when a student needs additional help, he/she should first ask me, the teacher. If I'm not available and it's a quick question, he/should should take advantage of the NCVPS Peer Tutoring Center. If more serious content tutoring/remediation is needed, the student/s can request one-on-one tutoring with me and/or a peer tutor. If a student is weary, nervous, and/or conscientious about taking the class online, he/she can request a Virtual Buddy from the NCVPS Peer Tutoring Center for moral support, technical assistance, and more. ABOUT ME....

I am a retired public school teacher who loves teaching! I taught Spanish for 24 years in a public high school and 7 years as an English as a Second Language teacher, K-12. I have taught all ages, from kindergartners to senior citizens. I have also taught at a private school and 2 community colleges. I have an undergraduate degree and graduate certification in Spanish. I am certified to teach ESL for K-12 and have an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction along with National Board Certification for teachers. I have approximately 40+ years of teaching experience. Besides teaching Spanish, traveling is my passion. I have traveled to 30 countries and have visited 14 of the 20 Spanish speaking countries. My picture to the left is in Cuba (love the old cars that have modern motors like Nissan/Toyota) where I was able to travel to a year ago. My bucket list is to travel to all of the Spanish speaking countries. I used to chaperone students to Europe, working for a travel agency in the summer and have been to Spain more than 60 times. In addition I lived and studied in Spain when I was in college. I love helping students learn and pushing them to reach their potential! I am proud to say that several of my former students have gone on to study Spanish and are Spanish teachers or working in a field where they use Spanish on a daily basis in their jobs.
