Mill Creek Magic Messages
News and Updates from Mr. Ortman and Mr. Murtha 4/21/2023
Mill Creek 6th Graders Impress with their 6th Grade Assessment Presentations!
Once the students put in all the hard work on their research, they still have to do what is arguably the most challenging part - present to their teacher, classmates, and often some special guest evaluators (e.g. Mr. Ortman; Mr. Murtha)! The presentations happened this past week, and they were quite impressive! 6th Grade students presented well-researched and visually impressive projects on topics such as the benefits and dangers of nuclear power, what is understood/misunderstood about ADHD, pioneers of womens' rights, and more!
Our 6th Grade students have much for which they should be proud. They all went through and completed a rigorous research process, and they all had poise as they presented to their peers and a number of adults. Wonderful job, 6th Graders! Thank you for your hard work and for sharing some very interesting research!
Mill Creek Truly Represents at the Reading Olympics!
This past Wednesday night, Reading Olympics took place for our Creekers at Warwick Elementary School. Congratulations to the seven Mill Creek teams that took part in the friendly reading competition! The students’ excitement and enjoyment made the night! Thank you to all who participated in the event… Mill Creek was incredibly well represented, and the students who took part had a wonderful experience!

Soliciting Volunteers for the Spring Fair!
From Mr. Ortman and Mr. Murtha
Since last week's newsletter had both PSSA and Class Placement information under the Principals' Message, we are purposely re-running the Class Placement message (just below) again this week. We kindly ask that, for parent sharing of Class Placement information, you adhere to the guidelines outlined below and that request be made by end of day next Friday, April 28. Thank you!
The purpose of this message is to help you understand the process we will be using at Mill Creek this year to decide your child’s placement for the next school year.
The professional staff will be involved in placement decisions for our students. Classroom teachers will collaborate with the Student Support Counselors, Reading Specialists, and Mr. Ortman/Mr. Murtha to create balanced classrooms taking each student's individual needs into account. The classes that are designed will be heterogeneous with a wide range of characteristics, needs, and abilities (academic, social and emotional). We will carefully review each homeroom classroom to make sure that it is well balanced, and to make sure the individual student's needs will be met.
If you have information about your child’s learning style that you feel is important for the Mill Creek placement team to have prior to placement, please send an e-mail to Mr. Ortman (sortman@cbsd.org) that includes that information on or before Friday, April 28th. While we value and consider any information you provide and will give it careful consideration, there is no guarantee about specific placement requests. Please be sure to meet the April 28th deadline.
Please do not request a specific teacher or request that specific students be placed with your child.
Thank you for your continued support and cooperation!
Have a great weekend!

IMPORTANT MESSAGE about Personal Electronic Devices...
Teachers have noticed an increase in the amount of electronic devices, especially smart watches, being brought to school by students. In some cases, student personal electronic devices are becoming obtrusive to instruction, especially if alerts are set to go off throughout the school day. Considering this, we would ask the following:
- Please consider having your child keep their personal electronic devices at home.
- If you feel your child must bring their personal electronic device to school, please have them put it on a setting that blocks alerts during the school day. For instance, the newer versions of Apple Smart Watches have a Schooltime feature that allows parents to limit the watch’s functionality during the school day (some older versions, however, do not have this feature).
- Another option is to have your child keep their personal electronic device silenced and in a secure part of their bookbag during the school day.
Additionally, we cannot ensure that a student’s personal electronic device will not go lost or missing when it is brought to school.
Thank you for your understanding regarding and attention to this matter.
