Borderline personality disorder
A disordered behavior pattern with onset by early adulthood that is characterized by multiple types of psychological instability and impulsiveness, often involves fear of abandonment and a risk of suicide, and may ameliorate with age.
Causes
Cause of BPD is unknown. Genetic, family, and social factors are thought to play roles.
Symptoms
- Cannot tolerate being alone
- Frequent feelings of boredom
- Frequent display of inappropriate anger
- Impulsiveness, such as substance abuse or sexual relationships
Risk factors
- Abandonment in childhood
- Poor communication with family
- Sexual, physical, or emotional abuse
Treatment
Individual talk therapy or group therapy might be helpful.
