Borderline personality disorder

A disordered behavior pattern with onset by early adulthood that is characterized by multiple types of psychological instability and impulsiveness, often involves fear of abandonment and a risk of suicide, and may ameliorate with age.


Cause of BPD is unknown. Genetic, family, and social factors are thought to play roles.


  • Cannot tolerate being alone
  • Frequent feelings of boredom
  • Frequent display of inappropriate anger
  • Impulsiveness, such as substance abuse or sexual relationships

Risk factors

  • Abandonment in childhood
  • Poor communication with family
  • Sexual, physical, or emotional abuse


Individual talk therapy or group therapy might be helpful.
