Provide Access to Clean Water
Safe water for a better future!
Why Is This A Grand Challenge?
Although water is available in abundance, many countries around the world do not have access to it because of the location of the region, low economy, or the water supply being contaminated by poisonous pollutants. Engineering innovative and inexpensive technologies can resolve this issue and save many lives for a better future for all!
Why Is Providing Access to Clean Water Important?
- Water is a necessity of life
- Developing countries lack access to clean water
- Used for domestic and agricultural uses
- Reduce deaths and illnesses caused by unsafe water and dehydration
- Water is needed for sanitation
Current Technology and Innovations
Vestergaard Frandsen's Lifestraw
A portable straw that removes waterborne bacteria through a super-fine filtration process using nanotechnology.
Dean Kamen's SlingShot
A water vapor distillation device, powered by combustible fuel, and cleans up to 5000 liters of water per day.
Red Button Design's Midomo
A convenient water filtration system powered by wheels that helps transport water and comes with a tracking bracelet.
The Benefits
What Are the Benefits of Achieving This Grand Challenge?
- Reducing water borne diseases to reduce deaths
- Cost savings in health care
- More girls can go to school
- Improved agriculture
- Reduce overall deaths
