April 11 - 15

Friendly Reminders & Important Dates

Friday, April 15: April Book Order Due

Just a reminder that your child should be reading at least 15 minutes each night. Please let me know if you need more fish scales!

The math sheets sent home each night are optional, but I ask that you at least discuss the topic with your child. If they demonstrate a strong understanding, feel free to recycle the homework. If you sense that your child is struggling with the topic, choose at least 2 - 4 problems to practice together. Thank you for your continued support at home!

This week, we will continue to work on retelling stories we have read. We have learned important details to include in a retell include characters, setting, problem, events, and solutions. We have been practicing summarizing stories in three sentences or less. What a challenge!

Our spelling words this week will include the letter 'y' making an 'i' sound. Our words are as follows:

  1. sly
  2. fly
  3. shy
  4. city
  5. party
  6. python
  7. buy
  8. always
  9. began
  10. +1 personal word to be decided as a class on Monday morning.

In Writer's Workshop, we have finished our first draft copies of our fiction stories. We will start our final copies this week!

After learning how to read and use information in a schedule, we will finish our unit on time.

In Topic 16, we will review addition strategies such as doubles, doubles +1, and doubles +2. We will use these strategies for numbers through 18.

Science / Social Studies

Last week, we received some new classroom critters -- mealworms and Painted Lady caterpillars! We will be making daily observations to see the various stages of their life cycles.

In social studies, we will be focusing on rights and responsibilities. Students will learn that rights are things that we are free to do. We will also learn that responsibilities are things that we should do.
