Forest Grove Falcons January/February
Focus on Caring
At Forest Grove, the month of January is a time of caring.
Not only is caring our point of emphasis in our Character Counts program, but we are also participating in the Great Kindness Challenge the week of January 25-29.
Under the direction of Counselor Zoe Roach and student council advisor Maryn Sanchez, the week will be packed with assemblies that emphasize acts of caring and spirit days that remind our students to treat each other well. The top three participating classes for the week can win a small prize!
Here is a line up of spirit days:
Monday: Dreaming of Kindness- wear your pajamas
Tuesday: Look-a-like Kindness- twin/multiples day
Wednesday: Turn your back to Meanness -backwards day
Thursday: Team up for Kindness/Nothing Beats Kindness- wear sports/team apparel day
Friday: Crazy for Kindness- Crazy hair/hat day
The class that has the greatest percentage of participants will win small prize.
Mrs. Roach has provided our teachers with a list of 50 acts of kindness to share with their students to get them thinking about how they can make their campus a better place.
On Wednesday, we will have performer and motivational speaker Juan Sanchez will bring his own unique message of kindness to our students using his wonderful sense of humor and enjoyable music.
Our Great Kindness Challenge will culminate with our Fabulous Falcon Assembly on Friday afternoon.
We hope to raise awareness about how much simple acts of kindness have impact the culture of our campus.

Back Parking Lot Student Drop Off
New Signage, New Procedure
We have made great strides this year to increase the safety of the student drop off/pickup procedure in the back parking lot. Our hope is that our new signage and an improved drop off/pickup procedure will make this even better. This new procedure will begin Monday, January 25th.
Working in conjunction with Pacific Grove Unified School District Director of Facilities and Maintenance Matt Kelly, we have designed a process for drop off/pickup that we think will be safer and more efficient.
The new procedure separates those drivers who want to drop off their students and those who want to walk their student to class.
If you want to drop off your student, enter the back parking lot and veer to the right. This lane will lead directly to the drop off zone. Please pull as far forward as possible, then release your student curbside. This is the safest way to drop off your child.
If you want to walk your child to class, veer left upon entering the parking lot and park in the third lane or further.
You will notice that the second lane is blocked by cones. This lane is reserved for pedestrians only during this busy time.
Director Kelly has developed a clear diagram that illustrates the new procedure.
We will be in the parking lot to help educate drivers and institute the new process.
Working together, we’ll be able to make a good situation even better.

Cell Phone Policy Clarified
Teachers have recently reported an increase in students using their cell phones during school hours to contact parents to bring in a project or a homework assignment.
A quick review of our school’s cell phone policy shows that this practice should be avoided.
“Students are discouraged from bringing cellular telephones to school. If it is absolutely necessary for your student to have a cell phone, please understand that the school does not accept any responsibility for the loss or damage to a student’s cell phone. Under no circumstances shall the cell phone be turned “on” at school. Cell phones must be kept in
the student’s backpack during the school day."
If students need to call home during the school day, they can use the telephone in the office.

Kids Eat Right Program
Our 5th grade classes are participating in Kids Eat Right program. The program is offering a free 5-week nutrition program to all 5th grade students. Kids Eat Right is taught by Registered Dietitians and Health Educators from CHOMP.
In five weekly, hour-long sessions, kids have hands-on food preparation and follow enthusiastic leaders in fun physical activities. Students learn what to look for when they go to the grocery store, and get tools and information to share their new nutrition knowledge at home. Students have three sessions making foods and two sessions of exercise.
