CAR RIDERS
READING PARTNERS NEEDED
Gwin Oaks Elementary has a wonderful volunteer reading program, Reading Partners. After a short orientation session, volunteer Reading Partners are paired with a student who could use a little boost in reading. The partners meet once a week with their student for a 30 minute session. These volunteers become a special friend to their students as they support their reading growth.
This program has been very successful, and we have seen great growth in our students. But, we always have more students who need support than we have volunteers. If you are interested in this program, please contact Sue Eason, Reading Partners Coordinator at sue_eason@gwinnett.k12.ga.us.
BOOK FAIR IS COMING
Reading is the most important skill you can teach a child. Of all the skills children learn, it is the one you can influence the most. Come to the Book Fair and experience a celebration of reading that provides families the opportunity to get involved in a universal mission: encouraging kids to read every day so they can lead better lives. Reading is vital to every child’s success, and raising kids as readers means getting involved while they’re young. Now is the time. There will never be a substitute for a parent’s direct involvement in his/her child’s education.
Mark your calendar during Early Release on Sept. 28 and Sept. 29 where you can help your child find the books they’ll love to read. You can also contribute books to the teacher’s classroom library so students will have easy access to reading every day. Please make plans to visit our Book Fair. Hope to see you there!
Book Fair Dates: Sept. 23, Sept. 26-27 (Browsing) Sept. 28-Oct. 4 (Buying)
Shopping Hours: 8:00-3:30
Extended Early Release Times: 7:45-5:00 (Wed., Sept. 28) 7:45-4:00 (Thurs., Sept. 29)
Reading Takes You Everywhere

Duncan Reid reading outside the Farmers Market.
Tyler Pruitt and his sister reading at Barnes and Noble.
Myra, Gabe, Makayla, Islas, and Daniel Arguello.
THE GWIN OAKS FAMILY LEGACY RESOURCE CENTER
Gwin Oaks students and parents are invited to visit the Family Legacy Resource Center. The Center is open Monday-Thursday from 10:45 AM-12:45 PM. Math games, flash cards, science DVDs, sight word activities, biographies, and board games are all just waiting to be checked out. All items are barcoded and can be checked out of the school much the same as materials from the Media Center. Items can be checked out for a period of two weeks.
Materials were purchased to encourage families to spend time together learning. All items in the Legacy Center were provided from the people of Cannon United Methodist Church. The volunteers who work in the Center are also Cannon members. Come by and visit today to see what the Legacy Center is all about.
