Flight Check April 2017
Dorothy P. Adkins Elementary
A Note from our Counselor, Ms. Pittillo.....
Sometimes, as parents, we question ourselves about best parenting practices. After all, we all hope to raise well rounded children who thrive socially and academically. While some days are smooth sailing, other days the wheels fall off the wagon before breakfast. Likewise, what works one day may not work the next.
Looking for a quick fix to a problem, we call our parents, best friends, co-workers, neighbors, anyone with a pulse. That’s after we’ve googled everything under the sun looking for a Parenting Instruction Manual. Unfortunately, that manual does not exist. That’s because each child is unique and “quick fixes” don’t work when dealing with human behavior.
Instead, we need an overall system or philosophy to address behavior. A philosophy we use at Adkins Elementary is Love & Logic. Both teachers and parents can benefit from this approach as it offers an alternative way to communicate with children.
Love & Logic offers simple, yet effective, techniques. It places a heavy emphasis on respect and dignity for children while allowing parents to feel more empowered and skilled in the interactions with their children. The premise is: Love allows children to grow through their mistakes, and logic allows children to live with the consequences of their choices. This approach puts parents and teachers back in control and teaches children to be responsible. It prepares children to function in the real world with its many choices and consequences.
