NEWS FOR THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 25TH

We've had a busy week as Mrs. Gillaspy (our PE teacher) and the Fuel Up to Play committee helped support our Hyvee Fit School Wellness Week. The students had fun dressing up each day, getting snacks, hand sanitizer, and masks from Hyvee, and doing extra movement activities. Thank you to Hyvee for helping support our students' health and wellness.

This upcoming week we will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week. Please read below for more information about the purpose of Red Ribbon Week and the activities that we'll be doing to help celebrate and also help support others in our community.

COUGARS of the WEEK: Oct. 19-23

HELP OUR COMMUNITY BY GIVING TO OTHERS

Kearney Key Club is honored to collaborate with many students and organizations across Kearney Public Schools to collect food for the Jubilee Center and the Kearney High Food Pantry.

Horizon, Sunrise, Meadowlark, and Kenwood will be gathering food donations from their students and parents starting the week of October 26th, ending on October 30th. These schools are instilling purpose and understanding in their students by teaching them to give to others in need and to appreciate the comforts they enjoy.

Kearney High Key Club, FBLA, and FCCLA will be collecting the donations on October 30th. The evening of the 30th these clubs will be dressed in costume from 3:45 – 6:30pm at the following locations:

  • Horizon

  • Sunrise

  • Kenwood

These clubs are asking the community to Scare Away the Hunger and use these locations to drive-thru and drop-off non-perishable food items. Kearney is extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to give back to the community.

Thank you for being a supportive community and have a great fall!

NEWS FOR THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 18th

END OF 1ST QUARTER

I'm overjoyed that we made it through one quarter of "in person" learning! We know how important it is that we stay in school as learning is more beneficial when we can be together and receive input and feedback. Thank you to all who have made this possible! You've helped by washing and wearing masks, washing hands, maintaining distance, and staying home when you are sick. Even though there are tough decisions such as having to stay home for 10-14 days, we all know it's a sacrifice that we are willing to take so we don't get others infected.

I also want to ask for your help. When your child is at home, please try to get some of the schoolwork that they've missed so when they come back, they don't feel overwhelmed with late work on top of their daily work. School can be a fun place if we all work together. Contact your child's teacher if you have questions. They want to help.

On Monday, October 19th, we will have our 1st Quarter Assembly via Zoom. We will recognize Quarterly Cool Cats, Golden Awards for classes, attendance recognition, and we will hear from our local Hyvee employees about our Hyvee Fit School Wellness Week. Although we are sad we cannot do this in person, we are grateful to be able to be in school and use zoom to bring us altogether.

NEWS FOR THE WEEK OF October 4th

BREAKFAST CHANGES

Breakfast served from 7:45-8:00

We will be having students in grades 1 through 5 go to the cafeteria to get their breakfast and take it to their rooms. We've had over 140 breakfasts to serve and this will help aid the kitchen staff. With the staggering of students arrivals, this shouldn't be a problem. Students in grades 1,2 and 4 can simply go right to the cafeteria from the main doors on the west and east. Grades 3 and 5 can also enter through those main doors, get their meals, and then go to their classrooms.

For students who come late, breakfast may be over so please make sure your child eats breakfast if they are not to school by 8:00. Even arriving at 8:00, school begins at 8:05 so eating a late breakfast may be interfering with their learning, If your child is eating at school, please make sure to have them there at 7:45 so this allows them time to eat and clean up before school begins at 8:05 AM. The teachers and I appreciate your support and cooperation in this matter.

FLU SHOTS--OCTOBER 6TH

FLU SHOTS WILL BE GIVEN TO THOSE WHO PREREGISTERED THIS TUESDAY AFTERNOON.

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK-OCT 4-11

The Kearney Volunteer Fire Department is excited to share their 2020 Fire Prevention message to "Serve up Fire Safety in the Kitchen". While presenting this year's program virtually is not ideal, they feel like the children in our community will still learn some great tips this year. The KFVD has provided teachers links for the 2 separate programs they prepared. After Fire Prevention Week is over, the Grade 1-5 program will be shared via their website and social media pages for all to enjoy.

For the younger kids, have a discussion about items in your home about "Not hot or might be hot". This could be a fun game to engage the kids. For all age groups, it's always good to discuss:

  • Having working smoke detectors
  • Testing smoke detectors monthly
  • Changing smoke detector batteries twice a year
  • Having and practicing a fire escape plan
  • Having a meeting place
  • Knowing who to call if you have an emergency (911)

Should you have any additional questions, please feel free to reach out.

END OF 1ST QUARTER IS OCTOBER 15TH---NO SCHOOL--Thursday and Friday, October 15th and 16th

Just a friendly reminder that we do not have school on Thursday and Friday, October 15th and 16th. .October 16th was previously on the calendar as a "no student day" as the teachers will be honing their skills for professional development and will be completing report cards for the first quarter. The district is giving students Thursday, October 15th the day off as a "no mask day". The staff and students have really worked hard to make sure we have "in person" classes so be safe and continue to use the Covid rules of wearing your mask, staying your distance, and washing your hands. Please come back ready on Monday, October 19th.
