Northern Southland College

Newsletter - Term 3 Week 6

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

2 September 2022

Kia ora koutou

Congratulations to our students that have represented NSC in Basketball, Netball and Rugby this week at their respective winter tournaments. We have had lots of feedback that our students acquitted themselves extremely well, showing determination and sportsmanship when playing sports and being respectful and helpful while on tour. A special mention to those students that have participated in their last winter tournament and also to our Under 15 rugby team members who won their South Island Secondary School tournament in style by winning every game and holding their opposition scoreless in the final.

Once again we thank you for your understanding when we had to roster home our junior students last Friday. With winter illnesses continuing to impact both staff and students we had no ability to staff all classes. Senior students were the group asked to remain onsite last Friday as they are fast approaching mock exams and as of next week only have six and a half weeks of timetabled classes remaining.

With mock exams beginning on Thursday 15 September it is timely to have a discussion with your senior student about where they are placed with their progress in general, the credits they have achieved, what internal credits they plan to achieve with the time remaining and which external assessments they are focusing on. If you would like any assistance in this area, please contact us at the college so that we can help.

Last newsletter it was announced that Toni Eyles has been elected as a new member onto the Board of Trustees. The following current members have also been elected to the Board of Trustees; Jonny Elder, Paul Heslip, Rebecca Price and David Bullmore. Nicola Bennett has decided to step down from the Board of Trustees, but has agreed to remain as an appointed member to help with the transition. Morwenna Pannett is the staff representative and Giavana Santelli the current student representative. Student elections are held annually and will be held again shortly. Thank you all for your ongoing service and commitment to NSC.

Gateway

Keri Youngman (Industry Training Advisor, MITO NZ) recently presented Jake Ussher with his MITO ShiftUp Ignition certificate. ShiftUp offers secondary school students the chance to earn a micro-credential in the road transport industry approved by NZQA, credits towards NCEA and a great introduction to the workplace. Congratulations Jake on this wonderful achievement. Keri made the comment that Jake’s practical assessment was one of the best she had ever seen. Jake is very worthy of these accolades and he will be an integral team member at Andrews Transport in 2023.

Senior Netball Tournament

Over the past week the NSC A Netball team have been up in Timaru competing in the South Island Secondary Netball tournament.

We left on Sunday morning to start the long drive up. Monday was the first day of games, where we fought hard but unfortunately came out with two losses.

Tuesday we came out fighting for the first game but lost again. The spirits were still high leading into the second game against Kaikorai Valley were we finally got our long awaited win 29-16. With the beach nearby a refreshing swim was needed to cool down ready for a big day on Wednesday.

Wednesday came around fast and two very worthy wins, first one was against South Westland school 31-23 and the second one was against Aurora College 46-6.

Thursday was finals day, where we lost our first game against Twizel. That meant we would go on to play against South Westland for 11th and 12th. The game was neck and neck right until the end were we came to a tie. We went into overtime where we fought our hearts out however lost by 2 points.

It has been an amazing week. Thank you to Miss Stark for being a fantastic coach and to Annie Armitage and Nick Duthie for being great support throughout the week and repairing our bodies every night before the next big day ahead.
