Making History Now!
Dr. Nadine Burke Harris
MD, MPH, Pediatrician
Title: Surgeon General of California
A Canadian pediatrician, Dr. Burke-Harris started a clinic for underserved populations in San Francisco after her residency. During this time, she found correlations between childhood trauma and common childhood psychological diagnosis such as ADHD, and then often debilitating physical health conditions such as autoimmune disorders. Dr. Burke began drawing from the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study by CDC when treating her patients. Since then, Dr. Burke’s work has raised awareness globally about the devastating impacts of childhood trauma, which is arguably the most paramount public health crisis of our time.

Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett
PhD, Virology Researcher
Title: Viral Immunologist
She attended the University of Maryland, Baltimore, as a Meyerhoff Scholar, a program that mentors minorities and women in science. Corbett's place as an influential person in the scientific community comes from her deep understanding of the socio-cultural issues, knowledge of science, and incredible interpersonal skills. Her accomplishments are many, including a summer internship at the National Institute of Health. She officially joined the NIH's vaccine research center as a post-doctoral fellow in 2014. She is currently at the forefront of the Covid-19 Vaccine.

Ron Finley
Founder of The Ron Finley Project
Title: Urban Gardener/Food Activist
Having grown up in the South Central Los Angeles food prison, Ron set out to fix the problem. He planted vegetables in the curbside dirt strip next to his home. And quietly, carefully, tenderly started a revolution.
Determined to change South Central Los Angeles from food desert to food forest, he wants his actions to be educational, inspiring, and nutritious. He wants kids to grow up with the option of healthy food, instead of fried, fattening staples. He wants to sweep up and transform his street, his neighborhood, the city of LA and communities everywhere.

New From College Board! Class of 2022
The College Board Opportunity Scholarships are now open for class of 2022 students. The program lays out six simple steps that all students can take to get to college.
For the class of 2022, the College Board Opportunity Scholarships program will help even more students plan for college, address affordability concerns, and connect them with other scholarship opportunities. Here are a few key changes to the program for the class of 2022:
- More than 7,000 students will earn a scholarship each year, nearly double the number of winners in previous years.
- All scholarship steps for the class of 2022 will be awarded for the same amount: $500. The Complete Your Journey award will remain $40,000.
- There's a new Explore Scholarships step to help students find scholarship opportunities that may be a good fit for them. And there's a simplified Practice for the SAT® step that will guide students to begin personalized SAT practice just for them.
At least half of all the scholarships—over $2 million each year—are awarded to students whose families earn less than $60,000 per year.
We encourage you to share this information with your juniors and have them sign up for the program. Their first step is to make a starter list of six colleges they're interested in, for a chance at $500.
Sincerely,
College Board

Engaging Counseling: COVID Style
- If students are struggling or are in crisis and need to speak to a counselor, students will be permitted to report to the counseling office. Students will need to sign in with Ms. Wilson. As always students will need a pass if they are coming from a class.
- Our window for course change requests has closed, but if students have scheduling issues, instead of reporting to counseling, as they have in the past, students will need to email their counselor with their requests. Counselors will get back with students within 24 hours of their email. The only exception to this rule would be if students have a missing period in their schedule. In that case they would report to counseling during the missing period to have their schedule corrected. Otherwise, they will follow their schedule.
- For college and career counseling, students should email their counselor to make an appointment. The counselors would love to talk to students about their plans and help you navigate their journey!
- Parent meetings will continue to be scheduled via phone and Zoom.
School Counselors
Brandy Seals
Hello! My name is Brandy Seals and I am super excited to be here at Centennial High School this year. So, I first decided to be a counselor whenever my school counselor at my high school helped me out a whole lot. Because of that, I wanted to give back and help out other students who might need support in different ways. I am here to help you guys with many different things and if you ever want to come talk about anything, I just want you to know that I’m here to listen. I can’t wait to meet you all in person and I am looking forward to having a great year!
Karen Whidby
As a Franklin, TN native I am honored to serve CHS in the school counselor role. Having been a college athlete and a first generation college student, I’m super excited to help students navigate their way through high school and toward their post-secondary goals. My goal for this year is to build trusting relationships with students and staff. I look forward to meeting you all!!
Molly Woods
(Co-Department Chair)
My name is Molly Woods. This is my third year as a school counselor at Centennial. I am here to help students through the academic, college/career, and social/emotional milestones and challenges of adolescence. At age fourteen, I decided I wanted to be a school counselor. My school counselor in high school was my greatest advocate. She supported me through the obstacles of high school and towards my dreams. Today, I have my dream job! I am passionate about supporting students individual needs AND helping build a school culture where ALL students can thrive.
Katherine Healy
Hi! My name is Ms. Healy and I'm so excited to be working at Centennial this year as one of your counselors! I fell in love with Nashville after moving here for graduate school and have already had such positive experiences at CHS. I've had the pleasure of working with many of you remotely this school year, and am eager to get to know you all better and see you succeed during your time at Centennial.
Ja'Kymberlie Barnes
My name is Ms. Barnes and I am one of the new school counselors here at CHS. I wanted to counsel at CHS because I felt it was a great opportunity to begin my school counseling journey at such an amazing school! There are many things that I love so far at CHS! I love the wonderful and welcoming staff as well as the families I have communicated with thus far. I am most excited about meeting all the students face to face so that I can get to know each and every one of you!
I am proud to be part of Cougar nation! Go Cougars!
Jesika Stuart
Co-Department Chair
My journey to becoming a school counselor started in Kindergarten with an excellent teacher who decided to become a school counselor. My relationship with Mrs. Davis is the reason I made it through high school and continued on to college. She inspired me to become a school counselor, and I love it! I take pride in helping create a program that enables all students to dream, grow, and pursue their goals. We have a great group of students at Centennial and I am thankful to have the opportunity to continue to serve the students of Cougar Nation.
