UPDATE FROM THE PROGRAM DIRECTOR, DOUG MIRTS
THIS WEEK AT THE CAPITOL
Please respond to the action alert about charter expansion SB 603 and SB 649, charter recovery SB 525. If you have not done so go to our website and register with Phone2Action. It is an easy way to contact your representatives about the legislation being discussed during the session. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK PRINCIPALS.
MoASSP CONNECT
We rolled out our first ever MoASSP Online Community last week. I invite you to take a gander and see what this new collaborative tool is all about for MoASSP members. MoASSP Connect is a way to bring secondary school leaders together in a collaborative venue to share ideas, solicit the advice of peers, and participate in an ongoing conversation. "MoASSP Connect" is under the umbrella of the Ed Leaders Network (ELN), and we will follow their "Code of Conduct." Several have already posted to the community. We invite you to do the same and begin using this statewide collaborative tool to connect with colleagues. For more information, CLICK HERE.
48TH ANNUAL SPRING CONFERENCE
In the next few weeks be watching for the 28 breakout sessions we will have during the conference. Because of your feedback we have added sessions and repeated sessions so attendees have more opportunity to see a variety of topics. We will continue to use the app from NASSP and stay tuned to next weeks Messenger, we will be disclosing a few new wrinkles for the conference. We're excited about a new General Session at the Spring Conference, called "INSIGHT FOR LEADERSHIP." Check out below the ten presenters who will be sharing INSIGHT on Tuesday, March 31. To register for the conference, CLICK HERE.
Reid Interviewing Workshop
If you did not get a chance to attend the Reid Workshop on "Developing Investigative Interviewing Skills" MoASSP will be hosting two one-day workshops next year. One in the fall and one in the spring. I will be looking for two regions to host and a facility that will allow 50-75 principals or assistant principals to attend. Contact Doug Mirts at dmirts@moassp.org if you think your region would have interest.
MoASSP ADVOCACY IS PAYING OFF
Dear MoASSP Member,
I am happy to report that thanks in part to principals and assistant principals contacting their Senator through our URGENT ALERT Wednesday morning, Senate Bill 525 was “laid over” and never voted on. Our advocacy efforts are working. Senate Bill 525, filed by Senator Ed Emery (R - Lamar), is a bill that relates to a charter recovery high school in Kansas City. The bill would allow students throughout Missouri to enroll in the Kansas City high school at the local district’s expense. The following nine Senators assisted in the four-hour filibuster:
- Lauren Arthur
- Justin Brown
- Lincoln Hough
- Doug Libla
- Jeanie Riddle
- John Rizzo
- Jill Schupp
- Gina Walsh
- Brian Williams
If you get a chance, take time to send these nine Senators a note of thanks. Our advocacy efforts must remain strong. As a reminder, SB 525 and the other charter school expansion bills can be brought up again at any time. If you haven't reached out to your Senator, it isn't too late. Click on the URGENT ALERT link above.
Respectfully,
Clark Mershon
Executive Director, MoASSP
