ConVal High School Happenings - September 24, 2021
Message From Principal McKillop
Earlier this week we opened our doors and welcomed parents/guardians to the building for open house. It was exciting to meet new families and greet those that were able to join us at school. If you were unable to attend, please remember that you can reach out directly to teachers via their respective school email address if you have any questions.
Please review the upcoming important dates section. As noted below, next week we will have a Naviance/Common App evening in the library and a college application overview for students and families in the Lucy Hurlin Theatre.
We are in our last week of collecting non-perishable food items for NH Tackles Hunger. Next week there will be a collection at all home athletic events, including our homecoming football game on Friday, October 1 at our stadium field. We will also have collection boxes inside the main entrance.
As you will see below, we have many exciting things happening in our classrooms. Our students have been busy creating, designing, and learning. I am fortunate to have observed this on numerous occasions when I have visited classrooms. I am proud of students and staff for all of their dedication and hard work.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Best,
Heather

NH Tackles Hunger
We are still collecting canned goods for NH Tackles Hunger. There are bins in the main entrance area to drop off any non-perishable food. Also, items can be brought to the Homecoming Football game on Friday, October 1, 2021. If you would like to make a direct donation online, please click HERE to help out the Peterborough Food Pantry.
In the past, we have collected over $2,500, and thousands of pounds of food. It would be great to top that to help tackle hunger here in our community.
ConVal High School Open House
After being greeted by Principal Heather McKillop on the apron, families followed COVID protocols to enter the high school and proceeded to TASC homerooms where they received a copy of their students' daily schedules. The remainder of the evening was spent in classrooms where parents could meet and informally interact with their children's teachers.
"I was grateful to meet new families and to see many familiar faces," Heather McKillop said after the event. "Anytime we can welcome parents and guardians to the building it is exciting, as we are one school community that truly cares about helping all of our students be successful."

Auto 1 Program
Students in the Auto I program are starting from the foundation up as they get to know cars; after taking apart engines in teams, they’re now cleaning the pieces are putting the engines back together. One student described the process as working with a big jigsaw puzzle, only they got to take the puzzle apart first and see it all together before having to reassemble it. Some students, like junior Nick Lawrence, are also taking advantage of instructor Ken Kalilainen’s expertise to do some work on their own vehicles; Nick just changed out the rims on his truck. The shop will soon be open to the community for vehicle repairs that connect with the curriculum the students are working on. For more information, contact Ken Kalilainen at kkalilainen@mascenic.org or Jen Kiley at jkiley@conval.edu.
Students in Lance Levesque’s Digital Photo and Video I class have been taking advantage of some of the beautiful fall weather to get in some great shots of campus and their classmates!
Running Start Information/Update
This opportunity allows students to earn transcripted college credit at the same time as they earn high school credit. The Governor's STEM scholarship was expanded this year to include all CTE courses as well, which means that the first two STEM and/or CTE Running Start eligible classes that a student takes this school year will be free of charge to the student and the school district!
Students who take more than two Running Start STEM and/or CTE classes or students taking College Composition will still be able to earn these credits for free; these credits are paid for with support of the ConVal School Board. Students in the classes below will be learning more about this opportunity in the upcoming weeks.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Jennifer Kiley @ jkiley@conval.edu or see the Nashua Community College representative at Open House on September 22!

Technology integration allows Algebra students to apply their graphing skills to solve problems
Ms. Sarah Gilpatrick is teaching her Algebra 1 part 2 students how to use Texas Instruments programmable calculators, called TI-Nspires, to solve systems of equations. An equation system is two or more equations that share variables, such as x + 2y = 6 and 3x - y = 11. One way this system can be solved is by graphing each equation. The point where the two lines cross is the solution to the system. In this example that would be when x = 4 and y = 1, or the point on the graph (4,1). Rather than creating their graphs by hand, Algebra students can enter each equation into the calculators. The TI-Nspire produces neat, clear graphs with the precise intersection point labeled. Equation systems are used to find the value of two variables at the same time. For example, suppose Skyler and Emily buy food from the same pizza restaurant. Emily buys 2 slices and 2 iced teas for $12. Skyler buys 4 slices and 1 iced tea for $18. How much did each pizza slice (x) and each iced tea (y) cost? [Hint: 2x + 2y = 12, and 4x + y = 18]
Solution: (4,2)
Cards for Hospitalized Kids
Offering card writing as an option during the ConVal Games meant that students could have fun, be creative, socialize with friends and do a good deed at the same time.
The students created nearly 50 cards to send during the games!
