Classification: Mammal

Life Span: Captive raccoons have been known to live over 20 years, their average life expectancy in the wild is only 1.8 to 3.1 years

Body: Its grayish coat mostly consists of dense underfur which insulates against cold weather. extremely dexterous front paws and its facial mask

Size: A body length of 40 to 70 cm (16 to 28 in) and a body weight of 3.5 to 9 kg (8 to 20 lb)

Interesting Fact: Raccoons are noted for their intelligence, with studies showing that they are able to remember the solution to tasks for up to three years.

NATURAL HABITAT

Habitat: Raccoons are deciduous and mixed forests, but due to their adaptability they have extended their range to mountainous areas, coastal marshes, and urban areas

How has the animal adapted to its environment: They nest in trees and eat everything from berries to fish. They are mostly nocturnal. Suburban raccoons live in people's attics, basements, garages, and storage sheds. Using their grasping hands, they have learned to open garbage cans and gates, creating quite a problem for their human hosts!

Means of defense/protection: Vocalizing defensively; raccoons leap and bite

LIVING HABITS

Diet Classification: Omnivores

Types of Food: Berries, other fruits, nuts, grains, and vegetables. They also eat insects, eggs, poultry, rats, squirrels, small livestock, birds, fish, snakes, crawfish, worms, frogs, and mollusks. Additionally, raccoons will eat pet food, carrion, and human garbage.
