Critical Standards
These are a few critical standards that all students should be able to know and do by the end of this school year.
Please work with your child on these skills at home to ensure they are learning all they can this year.
Remember to be sure your child is reading every night from a book of their choice at their level. This increases their skills & makes great family memories.
Kindergarten
Reading
- Know the names and sounds of all the letters of the alphabet.

- Write their name with the first letter capitalized.
- Write a sentence using "invented" spelling with the first word capitalized & a period at the end.
Math
- Count 20 objects.

First Grade
Reading
- Read common one-syllable words.

Writing
- Write 2-3 sentences about a topic or picture.
- Use sounds to spell with approximation.
- Use correct capitalization and sentence ending.
Math

Second Grade
Reading
- Recognize and read 2nd grade level words spelled irregularly. https://youtu.be/0uK65qs_kOs
- Read 2nd grade level text with understanding, being able to answer questions about the text.
Writing
- Write 4-5 sentences about a topic or picture.
- Use sounds to spell with approximation.
- Use correct capitalization and sentence ending.
Math
- Know Addition and Subtraction Math Facts up to 20 by memory.

Third Grade
Reading
- Ask and answer questions about a story: who, what, where, when , why & how.
- Identify the main idea and details of a story/passage.
- Write informational text introducing a topic, adding related details that are written clearly.
Math
- Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems by making drawings, etc.
- Understand the value of basic fractions: 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, & 3/4
Fourth Grade
Reading
- Describe the events or concepts of a passage in order
- Use comparison, cause/effect, sequencing to discuss a passage.
- Describe character, setting, and events of a story. Analyze the information, explaining evidence of a thought or idea.
- Add and Subtract multi-digit numbers.
- Multiply 2-digit by 2-digit numbers.
- Divide 4 digit numbers by a 1-digit divisor.
- Build on understanding of fractions using models.
Fifth Grade
Reading
- When reading a text, students will read grade level texts fluently in order to understand the passage. Students will re-read and use context to clarify their understanding.
Writing
- Write a multi-paragraph essay, introducing a topic, grouping related information, and developing with facts, definitions and details.
Math
- Students should be able to divide whole numbers up to 4 digits.
- Students should be able to add and subtract fractions with unlike denomiators, including using mixed numbers.
Sixth Grade
Reading
- When reading a section of informational text, students are able to identify the main idea and support it with details from the text.
Writing
- Students can write a multi-paragraph essay stating facts in a clear and organized manner using precise language and appropriate transitions. They can expand on their ideas using facts and evidence from sources.
- Students can use algebraic expressions with at least one variable to represent problems and solve them. They are able to do operations including fractions and exponents.
