Principal's Letter
Greetings Lake Windward Elementary Families,
It was so great to see so many families at our Chick-Fil-A Spirit Night last week! I loved spending time with our students and parents as well as supporting our school and business partner! Thank you to ALL who helped make this event so successful!
Also, we are so proud of our 4th and 5th grade chorus students. They sang the National Anthem beautifully at the Gladiators Hockey Game on Friday night. Thanks to all of the families who came out to cheer on our students. Also, a BIG thank you to Mrs. Kummerfeldt and Mrs. Ahmad for their leadership of our school's chorus program.
I want to be sure you all received the district communication regarding calendar changes for this school year. The school board recently voted to approve the changes due to some schools being used as election sites, and the safety concerns that come along with that. Here is a summary of the calendar adjustments:
- March 13, 2020 remains a teacher workday as previously planned.
- March 24, 2020 (GA Presidential primary election) will be a teacher workday.
- April 21, 2020 (state-wide election) will be a student Digital Learning Day and a teacher professional development day.
- May 19, 2020 (state-wide election) will be a student Digital Learning Day and a teacher professional development day.
As previously planned, students will also be out on November 4th (RFF day) as well as November 5th (election day/teacher workday).
Warm regards,
Julie Morris

Classroom Highlights!
Seesaw is up and running in classrooms throughout the building! This platform is so versatile in allowing students to showcase work, demonstrate learning and communicate with families.
- Teachers create opportunities for Seesaw:
in their station rotations
for project creation
to review students' thought process
to offer a hands-on approach to learning
If you're unfamiliar with Seesaw, you can learn more about how to stay connected with the classroom here - https://web.seesaw.me/parents
Be on the lookout for parent and family invitations from your students' teachers. If you already have access to your student's Seesaw journal, be sure to check in frequently to see updates and interact with their hard work.
How Can You Help?
Flu season is upon us! Let’s fight the flu together!
Influenza is a contagious disease of the respiratory tract (nose, throat, and lungs). Typically the flu spreads from person to person when an infected person coughs or sneezes. People also become infected when the virus gets on their hands, and they rub their eyes or nose. Flu symptoms may include fever, headache, extreme fatigue, cough, sore throat, runny nose, and muscle aches.
Follow these good health guidelines: eat right, exercise, and get plenty of rest to help boost your immunity to fight the effects of colds and flu. Wash hands frequently, do the elbow cough, and disinfect hot spots at school, work, and home.
If you think your child may have the flu:
-Make sure he/she has plenty of rest.
-Encourage him or her to drink plenty of caffeine-free liquids to avoid dehydration.
-Give non-aspirin pain relievers to reduce fever.
-Keep home from school until they no longer have symptoms and are fever-free for at least 24 hours without a fever reducing medicine.
-Contact your health care provider if you have questions about the illness.

Procedure for Absence Approval in Extenuating Circumstances
Students should be present in school every day unless illness or other extenuating circumstances exist. The Georgia Board of Education lawfully excuses students for the following reasons: personal illness, death in the immediate family, religious holidays, and other educational days as pre-approved by the school principal. The principal has at his/her discretion according to Board Policy the option to approve a maximum of six (6) days per student per school year in extenuating circumstances. Parents/guardians must notify the principal of their request by completing the request form located on the school website at least two weeks prior to the absence. Submission of parental/guardian request does not grant automatic approval. A school administrator or designee will contact the parents/guardian upon the final decision. As in the past, absences for illness, death in the family or religious holidays can be approved by your child's teacher by sending in a signed note from you.
- The principal approval form is to be used for extenuating circumstances only, as stated in the information above.
- Two weeks ahead of the planned absence, print and complete the request form located on the Lake Windward website.
- One form is required per student.
- Submit the completed, signed, and dated form to the Lake Windward front office.
- Your student’s attendance record will be taken into consideration when reviewing your request.
- A copy of the decision to accept, decline or amend your request, will be sent to you and your child’s homeroom teacher.
Email requests will not be accepted
