Why We Have "Teddy Bears" today
Theodore Roosevelt was an avid hunter. On one particular trip, he was having trouble finding a bear to add to his collection. So one of his hunting guides found a small bear and tied it to a tree for TR to shoot. TR refused to shoot the bear (shown in this political cartoon). Some candy store owners heard the story and decided to nickname their stuffed animals bears "Teddy Bears' in honor of the President. The idea caught on and to this day Teddy Bears are popular with children everywhere.
