ELA

We have been learning about a major industry in North Carolina - Christmas Tree Farming! Did you know -
  • The North Carolina Christmas Tree Industry is ranked second in the nation in number of trees harvested and cash receipts.

  • The North Carolina Fraser fir has been judged the Nation's best through a contest sponsored by the National Christmas Tree Association and chosen for the official White House Christmas tree 12 times (more than any other species)....1971, 1973, 1982, 1984, 1990, 1993, 1995, 1997, 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2012.

We have also been learning a lot about the National Gingerbread Competition held in Asheville, NC each year along with how gingerbread houses are designed and built. This will culminate in our own 4th grade gingerbread house competition this week.

Math

We have just started a short unit on geometry. The kids love geometry and seem to have a good background in many geometric terms. This coming week we will be looking for those terms within shapes in order to categorize and name them. Terms that are VERY important to know are parallel and perpendicular as well as acute angle, obtuse angle, right angle, and line of symmetry. Please ask your child to describe these terms to you as well as to point out some examples of them in the world around us.

We will be taking our CFA's (common formative assessments-basically end of standard tests) this week for our geometry skills. Here is a good site they can visit to study some of these terms. There are also several IXL goals and TenMarks assignments they've been assigned in order to study. Check with them to see if they've completed them.

Science

We are finishing up our unit on nutrition. Students have been working in partners to research, write a script, and film commercials advertising a fruit or vegetable. I've been so impressed with what students have done so far! it's amazing how creatively they can demonstrate their learning!
