Developing Language
Grocery Shopping is something that all of us do. Although there are now options to pick up our groceries there are many things you can teach your child while browsing the aisles together. The nouns that can be targeted are endless. If your child is just beginning to label nouns you try the strategy of expansion or what we refer to as “one up”. This is taking what your child said and adding a little more to increase language. This is especially natural to do when shopping for fresh produce. Examples of this are “big watermelon” “little red apples”, “White onion”, “little orange carrots”. If your child is labeling items frequently you can target increasing how many words, they connect to produce sentences. Examples of this include: “I want _____”. If your child has difficulty with following specific directions with placement words you can target this as well. Examples of this include: “in/out of the cart”. Even if you are not having your child follow these directions to get items off the shelves (we know this can be a little much with little hands taking produce off shelves😊) you can model and talk through what you are doing with these concepts. Examples include: The fruit loops are on the TOP of the shelf. They are ABOVE the Lucky Charms. I’m going to put them IN our cart. Grocery shopping with littles can be an adventure, but there is so much learning and language development that can take place as well.
