Fireplaces and fire in general have been a part of human's lives for centuries and centuries. Since the cavemen to now, humans need heat, the most common source of heat: Fire! Needing to heat up our homes, fireplaces became an necessity. Now fireplaces are more for the appearance of the elegance and refinement fireplaces bring into the home.
Wood Burning Fireplaces
Traditional Open Hearth Fireplace
This type of fireplace is what most people first imagine. It is normally built from stone or brick.
Fireplace Inserts
The enclosed fireplace is inserted into a wall.
Wood Burning Stove
Technically speaking not a real fireplace but it does require a pipe to the chimney and it burns wood inside.
Gas Burning and Ethanol Fireplaces
Vent Less Built-in Fireplace
No chimney or vent. They are the simplest to install.
Wall Mounted Fireplace
This is an ethanol fireplace. It can be install anywhere on the wall. It is a heat source or just a piece of art.

They are meant to give the appearance of a good old fashion mantel open fireplace, but the flame is electric. It gives you the look just without to hassle and expense.

Wood burning fireplaces- more expensive but authentic
Gas/Ethanol fireplaces- expensive, but looks modern and cool
Electric fireplaces- least expensive but not authentic
My Thoughts
I chose fireplaces because I enjoy the sound and warmth they bring. I like how a fireplace brings a center vocal point and class to the room. I would choose the wood burning fireplaces because I like the authentic feel.
