Staff Spotlight
Name: Sarah Wong
1. How did you get involved in culinary arts and what path has taken you to Westview?
I have been cooking for 30 years, a chef for the last fifteen and a Culinary educator for 13 years. I've lived in the pacific northwest off and on since 1991, when I moved here to get my bachelors and masters from Seattle University. I learned about Westview from Curtis, who attended several of my butchery classes.
2. What have you noticed about Westview during your first week?
The faculty and staff have been SO welcoming and helpful, everyone seems to really enjoy working with the students. And the students! They are funny, smart, respectful and curious, everything I love about working with young adults.
3. If you could have a gigantic billboard anywhere with anything on it - metaphorically speaking, getting a message out to millions or billions - what would it say and why? It could be a few words or a paragraph. It could be someone else's quote or any quotes you think of often or live your life by. Why would you put it on a billboard today?
When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe. - John Muir
Last question:
Is their anything about you that staff might be surprised to know? (Talents, experiences, awards, etc...)
I currently also teach and help run the Portland Meat Collective and travel around the country teaching people about sustainability and food systems.
I look forward to working with everyone this year!
Respectfully
Sarah Wong

Balancing the Holidays in schools and classrooms
Information provided by the School District:
Balancing the Holidays in Your Building
Providing an inclusive learning environment is critical to empowering all students for post-high school success. Beaverton is a diverse school district where students bring in multiple life experiences into our classrooms. With such diversity, we have a unique opportunity and responsibility to balance the holidays to create an inclusive environment, especially in the coming months where certain religious holidaysare traditionally highlighted. It is the policy of the BSD that the district should encourage all students and staff to appreciate and respect each other’s views. It is important that all educators embrace the diversity of cultural backgrounds and religious beliefs in our schools and society. Special care must be taken to ensure that students do not experience exclusionary feeling and can participate comfortably in school programs, displays, performances, classroom activities and/or celebrations. Classroom parties and celebrations held at a holiday time must be secular in nature and their overall effect should not promote or favor any religious practice, belief or non-belief. Please review Policy IGACA: Recognition of Religious Beliefs and Customs, AR, including Q&A, on IGACA: Recognition of Religious Beliefs and Customs, and "Things to Think About:Balancing Holidays in Your Classroom/Building."
Great Article from BSD Office of Equity
Speaking Up Against Hateful Rhetoric
“These days, speech that trades in prejudices, biases and stereotypes is more than just commonplace: We’re seeing it in the headlines every day. And our students aren’t just hearing it from peers. More and more, it’s adults who are spreading hate. So what do we do?” This quote comes from a recently published Teaching Tolerance article that provides insight into strategies to combat hateful speech. The article outlines 4 concrete steps: 1) Interrupt, 2) Question, 3) Educate, and 4) Echo. As a district, we are constantly looking at larger systemic issues like hiring, PD, resource allocation, etc. However, taking small but important steps in our daily lives can go a long way to change a culture. Happy Sunday Staff! There is some super cool information in the Staff Newsletter (http://bit.ly/WHSstafftech18) this week:
- Secondary illuminatED. A creative moment coming to WHS on 2/13/19 where TOSAs from around the district will come for one study hall to explore different applications with our students. We are looking for feedback and suggestions to make this event the best it can be: http://bit.ly/2ndaryWHS.
- Loads of apps in this edition of the newsletter...our students have been doing a bunch in their classrooms this week. Check out Piktochart, Canva, Microsoft Translator, Rewordify, and more.
And more! If your students could use these skills, just send me an email and I can come to your class. http://bit.ly/WHSstafftech18
