The Husky Howl
January 18 - January 22, 2021; Week 18, Semester 2
A NOTE FROM YOUR HUGHES MIDDLE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS
HMS Parents and Friends,
Welcome to week 18 of the 20-21 school year. There are some upcoming dates mentioned in this newsletter that need to be added to your family's calendar and "To Do List." Please read carefully to see what pertains to you.
We want to say a huge THANKS to everyone who supported Hughes last week with the administration of the Winter Session of the MAP assessments. We are seeing some good results with achievement and growth. This week we will continue to complete the MAP assessments and wrap up by Friday.
I hope everyone remembers that Monday, January 18 is a federal holiday for all students, teachers, and staff. Please make sure arrangements for your child's care has been secured. This holiday has traditionally been a "Service" holiday as a legacy for Martin Luther King Jr. We hope you will find ways to do service for others this day and beyond. Your leadership and modeling can make a tremendous difference in the lives of our teens.
In closing, we want to remind everyone that everyday matters when it comes to school. The gaps in learning created by the unfortunate hurdles of COVID-19 including being out of school last year for a significant time and the reduced number of desired interactions in the classroom due to required social distancing are real for many of our students. However, the most unfortunate reason for academic gaps for some students is the lack of consistent attendance. We will continue to work to maintain and even correct attendance records. What is needed from on-campus families is the commitment to make sure their children are in class everyday possible. We need the synchronous virtual families to commit to a plan for their child to be on the daily Zoom calls with their class and to complete assigned work. For asynchronous virtual families, we need their children to complete daily check-ins and their daily assignments. Without these commitments, our children will suffer.
Ultimately, our children will be the benefactors of good attendance. As adults we must take responsibility for providing guidance and strong leadership at home and at school.
Until next week,
Your HMS Administrative Team
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
All students and staff members will observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 18. This American federal holiday marks the birthday of MLK (January 15.) The MLK Day of Service celebrates the Civil Rights leader's life and legacy. All Americans are encouraged to volunteer to improve their communities.
