Pennsylvania PBS

PBS affiliate stations throughout Pennsylvania have partnered with the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) and created Learning at Home. These efforts provide continuity of educational opportunities throughout the Commonwealth.

  1. On-air broadcasts of educational, standards-aligned programs Monday - Friday from 10 am-3pm to supplement your distance learning. Programming is aligned by grade bands and color-coded by Learning Goals so that you can easily find the program that's right for your child/student. (If students have access to the internet, they can also live stream their PBS station’s channel.)
  2. Weekly educational activity sheets for pre-k and elementary grades.
  3. Ten days of pre-packaged, standards-aligned curriculum in math, science, English language arts, and social studies for grades K-12 through WQED’s Support our Schools.
  4. Short Webinar Series that will help you understand how to use these resources.
  5. Pennsylvania PBS education directors who can call you directly to help you understand how to use these resources.

HIGH FLYERS

Riverview IU6:

"High Flyers" Drone Camp. Educators from DuBois Area, DuBois Central Catholic, JEFF TECH, Oil City, Punxsutawney, Redbank Valley, Titusville, GEMS Club, and Penn State Extension will receive training from For the Win Robotics on their BUILD, FLY, CODE lessons. Educators will then engage students in these lessons. Each district received a set of drones and resources on a Raspberry Pi, to engage students -even without Internet access - in STEM. This is a program working with our partners at PA Rural Robotics, For the Win Robotics, TIU#11, and WQED Pittsburgh.

Family Code Night

Family Code Nights occurring in November and December across PA!

The #CSinPA team is pleased to partner with CS is Elementary to offer National Family Code Nights to elementary school communities across the Commonwealth. Since its launch at one elementary school in 2018, there have been thousands of Family Code Nights across the country, including at the White House. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, CS is Elementary created virtual Family Code Nights.

There are 10 National Family Code Night events between October 19 - December 9, and we’d love to see Pennsylvania schools engage in every one of them. As a starting point, here are a few pre-made resources.

Thousands of households and families will not be able to stream the virtual event due to a lack of broadband. To support access and equity in education, Pennsylvania PBS stations are working with PDE to air family code night on TV. Households can participate in the family code night by watching it on their local PBS station and using simple household items as their “coding kit”

Statewide broadcast Dec. 10 from 7 pm-8 pm on all 7 Pennsylvania PBS stations

Program Description: This hour-long special will encourage children, ages kindergarten through fifth grade, and their families to get excited about computer science together! Computer science is an exciting and growing field that impacts the world in countless ways. A large part of computer science is computer coding. If you don’t know much about computer coding, you will not want to miss this special. Children and their families will not only learn about coding and the exciting careers that depend on it, they’ll also be invited to participate in hands-on activities that will help to introduce the basic principles of coding. The best part? No computer or special materials will be required.

Remote and Hybrid Teaching: Coaching and Consulting

We are offering a three day package of training, coaching, and consultation at no cost to each district. Here are the components of the package:

1. A four hour training (your choice of delivery---in person, synchronous, or self-paced asynchronous) on the themes and components of effective instruction and how those components transcend delivery mode. We will address how to strengthen and increase student engagement, deeper learning, our online strategy toolbox, and complete an assessment of online tools for learning purposes. This training includes examples of practical strategies that can be used to elicit engagement and deeper thinking from students, no matter the delivery method.

2. Two and half days (used at your discretion) with a team of curriculum specialists to work with small groups of teachers in implementing components of the above training.

3. Click here to watch a short video explaining the details of the package. Please schedule by clicking here if you are interested.
