Newtons 1st Law of Inertia

Why is it important to wear a seatbelt in the car?

First, let's learn a little about Newton's first law...

Newton's first law... Everything in motion tends to stay in motion, and everything at rest tends stay at rest unless and unbalanced force acts upon it.

Seatbelt? Nah...

Ok. So we all know that there are people out there who don't wear seatbelts, and that person might be you! Well seatbelts save lives everyday. Do you know why we would go flying out the window if we didn't wear a seatbelt? Well Newton's law of inertia says that as long as there are no unbalanced forces acting upon it, an object will continue moving. So if you don't wear a seatbelt and your car has an unbalanced force act upon it, you will keep moving at the same speed as the car was until an unbalanced force stops you.

Now you see why it's important to wear a seatbelt!

Seatbelts are life savers!

So now you see that inertia can be cruel! Well, this doesn't necessarily have to happen to you! As long as you have an unbalanced force acting on you at the same time as the car stops, you'll also be stopped! Well here's some more good news... Your seatbelt was created to do just that! Make sure to always wear your seatbelt so you don't have to be stopped by a different unbalanced force!
