In a world filled with challenges and uncertainties, the dedication to creating a nurturing and enriching environment for ALL of our OHS students is truly commendable and can only be done through the continued collaboration as a staff and community. Whether it's through scholarships, mentorship programs, extracurricular activities, or simply the encouragement to dream big, together we continue to play a pivotal role in shaping the futures of ALL of our OHS students.
Your belief in our potential has not only inspired us at OHS but has also empowered us to strive for excellence in our academic and personal pursuits leading to our students' success. Your support has given us the confidence to reach for the stars and to believe that we can achieve our goals, no matter how ambitious they may seem to ensure ALL OHS students have every opportunity available to them.
As we continue improving the educational journey provided to our students, we carry with us the lessons, values, and opportunities you have bestowed upon us. I want to thank everyone who is involved with shaping the success of our students through their generosity and commitment to our success have sowed the seeds of positive change, not only in our students and staff, but in the broader community as well.
So, from the bottom of our hearts here at OHS, thank you for being champions of education, for investing in the futures of ALL of our students, and for providing us with the chance to help our students and staff to grow, learn, and thrive. OHS PIRATE SPORTS UPDATE
Pirates win a thriller
The game between Oceanside and San Pasqual had more in common with a Madden video game than a high school football contest.
The Thursday night special under a full moon had a little bit of everything from fumbles to interceptions to blocked kicks.
As the teams went back and forth deep into the fourth quarter, it became clear that one team was going to have to hit that elusive button on their imaginary controller to gain the victory.
It's the "Cheat Code" button where players do amazing things outside the realm of the regular game.
For the Pirates it was quarterback Joseph Vinup and receiver David Daniels who cracked the code.
The duo connected on a 60-yard pass play with just under 40 seconds to play and kicker Christian Sanchez Barba's extra point was the difference in Oceanside's improbable 35-34 win over the Golden Eagles in a showdown for control of the Valley League.
The Pirates are now 3-0 in league and 4-3 overall, while San Pasqual slips to 2-1, 2-4.
Tied at 28-28, Oceanside gave up the go-ahead on a 10-yard touchdown pass, however, Trey Nastazio and Geordan Beamon broke through the line and blocked the extra point, giving the Eagles a 34-28 lead. Earlier with the game tied at 28, the same duo broke through and blocked San Pasqual's go-ahead field goal midway through the fourth quarter.
Then, two plays later, Vinup, who replaced injured starter Andrew Miller, scrambled to his right and unleashed a long pass to Daniels, who had no defender within 15 yards, and easily scampered into the end zone.
For the game, Vinup completed 13-of-19 passes for 295 yards and two touchdowns. Nastazio was his top target with 4 receptions for 140 yards, including a 29-yard TD catch in the back corner of the end zone. Running back Georgie Nua had touchdown runs of 6 and 1 yards, while Riley O'Malley had a 59-yard TD run.
Oceanside put its defense under great duress the entire game with fumbles and interceptions. OHS held San Pasqual to 86 yards rushing and 182 yards passing for the game.
The Pirates are in action next Friday at Rancho Buena Vista as they continue their quest for the league championship.
Wrestlers off to a great start
If the preseason meets are any indication, then the Oceanside wrestling program can raise its expectations.
Last weekend, Chole Stidham took first place in girls varsity at 145 pounds, while Isaiah Giron was fourth in boys JV at 113 pounds.
Earlier, Pedro Castaneda was second varsity boys 285 pounds and Penelope Verdugo earned a third place at girls varsity 145 pounds.
Girls Golf closes in on league title
The Oceanside girls golf team set a school record with its 15th victory of the season when it defeated Vista, 212-234, at the Golf Club of California Tuesday.
The Pirates are now 8-0 in the Avocado League and 15-0 overall and face La Costa Canyon on Monday and Tuesday to decide the league championship. If OHS can win both matches, it will take the league title outright. A split with the Mavericks will earn them a co-championship.
Either way, the Pirates are stalking their third consecutive league title, which will be the first in girls golf in school history.
Lia Nance was medalist of the match with a 37. Dany Bertino shot a 39, which was her first-ever round in the 30s and Kassidy Stevens shot a 41.
Singles carry Girls Tennis
Once again, the Oceanside girls tennis team relied on its strong singles play, but it was one doubles team that made all the difference at San Pasqual Tuesday.
No. 1 doubles, Alondra Mendoza and Claire Thompson took one set that enabled OHS to tie the match at 9-9 and the Pirates won the tiebreaker in games, 68-62.
Laura and Mia Ramirez won all their sets without losing a game and Brianna Robinson took two sets for Oceanside.
Vista edges Girls Tennis
In a match where every game mattered, the Oceanside girls tennis team came up just a bit short, tying Vista 9-9, but losing on games, 59-57.
In singles matches, Laura Ramirez and Mia Ramirez each won three sets easily, while Brianna Robinson won two of three for the Pirates. No. 1 doubles team of Alondra Morales and Claire Thompson won a set, forcing the match into the games won tiebreaker.
Girls Volleyball can't finish vs. RBV
The Oceanside girls volleyball team is finding the road to be a bit rocky in the Valley League
The Pirates led midway through each game, but couldn't close against the Longhorns, who took the 25-16. 25-18, 25-22 win Tuesday night.
Setter Elena Gonzalez-Hughes led OHS with 16 assists, 10 digs and 5 aces before leaving the third game with an injury. Faye Naotala had 10 kills to pace the offense.
E-bike Safety
E-bikes are more popular than ever and as their popularity increases, education about e-bike safety is of the utmost importance.
Did you know?
Riders age 17 and younger must wear a helmet.
It is illegal to carry passengers on your e-bike unless it features an additional permanent seat.
Sidewalks are meant for pedestrians, not e-bikes.
Riding against the flow of traffic is prohibited.

OHS PTSO
For those new to OHS, PTSO includes Parents, Teachers and Students to support the school community. Some of our goals are to promote parent interaction, support the faculty and staff and promote student achievement. Each year is a bit different so we welcome your ideas on ways we can support the school. The donations we receive and the funds we raise go toward staff appreciation events, teacher and club grants, student events, and more. We work closely with our principal Mrs.Garrahy, the administrators and counseling team to be responsive to current needs. All members have a vote in how our funds are used and we have a few openings for leadership positions if you want to give some time.
If you would like to join us or renew your membership for the year, please fill out the form here: OHS PTSO Form 2023-24. If you are interested in volunteering or serving on the board, please indicate that on the form.
Whether you participate in meetings or not, you can support our efforts with a tax-deductible donation. Please go here: PTSO Donation Page (Paypal or CC) or use our new venmo @osideptso. And please join us for our restaurant nights throughout the year.
We typically meet monthly on the first Wednesday of the month at 6pm. Stay connected with us by joining our Facebook group @Oceanside High School PTSO Parents for Pirates or following us on Instagram @piratesptso.
