Bilingual Education
Why do bilingual students have to transition from one language to another language within two to three years?
It is not possible for a student to transition to a new language in less than two to three years being in bilingual education. According to Cummings, he studies and works on language development and literacy development of second language learners, he states that “Despite teacher observation that peer-appropriate conversational fluency in English developed rapidly, a period of 5 to 7 years was required, on average, for immigrant students to approach grade norms in academic aspects of English” (Cummings). Cummings says that teachers can help the students learn a new language, but in order for them to acknowledge every aspect of English students need five to seven years of being in bilingual education. In order for students to be able to learn a new language they have to be in a bilingual class for at least five years. In schools, students are able to be part of a bilingual program only if there are 20 or more students whose home language is something else other than English. If there are less than 20 students then students would be placed in a different program or in a general classroom. When students are placed in bilingual classes, the students get monitor in order to see if they are ready to move to a general classroom. For instance, I work in a school in which they only offer bilingual education until 2nd grade, if students still need help transitioning to English, the students would have a difficult time when they go to 3rd grade because there would not be any help except the teacher help, but only if the teacher speaks Spanish. If students transition to another language in 2 to 3 years they might not be able to acquire the necessary information in order for them to transition to English.
