Free and Reduced Lunch Forms due!
There's still time to apply for Free and Reduced Lunch.
Why should you apply when lunch is free this year, you ask?
Our Title 1 funding is granted based on the number of families who qualify for Free and Reduced lunch. This money is used for the following at Sunrise: Reading Teachers, Instructional Coaches, Behavior Supports, supplies for students, professional development for staff, evening events for families and supplemental programs for students.
Please consider applying, even though lunch is free this year. It only takes a few minutes but can mean a world of difference to your family and to Sunrise.

Updates from DVUSD re: the Safe and Healthy Schools Plan
During Quarter 3, visitors and volunteers are permitted on school campuses on a limited basis. Visitors are allowed for instructional purposes and must be approved by campus administration. Volunteers are allowed to support school operations only in certain areas and specific times. Volunteers must be approved by campus administration. These parameters on visitors and volunteers are subject to revision in early to mid- February, 2022
- Visitors/volunteers may be allowed per normal District and campus procedures beginning 30 minutes after dismissal and field trips.
- Front office staff will continue to attempt to conduct all business with the public via appointments. Community members are encouraged to conduct business with front offices by scheduling appointments ahead of time.
- Front offices will be configured in a manner that limits the number of persons so that social distancing can occur. Front office staff will direct the public to wait outside if the maximum number of persons is reached inside the front office.
From our front office...
It is vital that our students arrive on time every day!
If your child will be joining us for breakfast, he or she should be at school by 8:00 am. Breakfast in the classroom begins at 8:00 am; classes begin at 8:15. Students may arrive no earlier than 8am and should enter through the gate closest to where they walk from.
According to Board Policy #JED(1), “Students will be punctual in reporting to school and to classes and will attend regularly.” When children walk in after class has begun, not only have they missed important instructional time, but the entire class is disrupted due to the late arrival of the tardy student. A tardy will only be excused when it is due to a medical or dental visit. Students arriving after certain times receive no credit for the day and the tardies become absences. Excessive absences result in being reported to the CUTS program.
∙ Students may be referred to the CUTS program on their fifth (5th) unexcused absence, or when the student has been absent ten percent (10%) of the school year [approximately eighteen (18) school days. The CUTS program, administered by the Division of Community Services under the direction of the Maricopa County Juvenile Probation Department, is a diversion program designed for juveniles who commit a first or second truancy offense and are willing to take responsibility for their behavior. The goal of the program is to increase school attendance.

Sunrise Family Coding Night
Sunrise is excited to hold its first Family Code Night on January 11th at 5 pm! Parents will pair up with their children for this virtual event to do their first hour of coding, together.
So, what is coding? Coding, sometimes called computer programming, is how we communicate with computers. Code tells a computer what actions to take, and writing code is like creating a set of instructions. By learning to write code, we can tell computers what to do or how to perform a function.
Please join us for a delightful evening experience where students take the next step in learning about computer science! Students may use their school-issued Chromebook for the event.

Password will be sent out in email blast on day of event.
News from Ms. G!
Hello Sunrise Families!
I hope everyone had a restful and safe winter break. With a new month comes a new Social and Emotional Learning topic: Showing Empathy and Compassion. To integrate our SEL theme and our Zones of Regulation, students will be receiving and practicing different strategies and skills on how to show empathy and compassion towards one another. Another Zones topic with this SEL theme is building self-compassion and self-confidence. On my weekly behavior forecast students will be working on different Zones tools in order to show empathy and compassion towards one another but themselves too. You can help your child at home too, by having them practice these tools while they are home and out in the community. One of the tools that the students will see this month, and a personal favorite of mine is: "Be Your Own Bestie." When a problem or situation is weighing on you and stressing you out, ask yourself, "What advice would I give to a good friend in this situation?" Sometimes taking ourselves out of the situation and thinking about what someone else would say or do helps us see things differently. Giving the love we would give to others is important for our own self-care. As parents you can model this tool as well. Talk with your child about ways you give yourself compassion and empathy towards yourself and others and help us spread kindness all around our community. As always, if you'd like more information on Zones and how it can provide benefits to you and your child at home, please reach out to me at aimee.grandi@dvusd.org.
