SLCS District Update
February 2, 2023
Superintendent's Update
Dear SLCS Families and Staff Members,
Thank you to the staff members, volunteers, and students who made our Kindergarten and Junior Kindergarten Welcome Event such a success last week! Please see below for some of the pictures from this exciting event. We are so excited to welcome the Classes of 2036 and 2037!
On an older end of the spectrum, last night SLHS and South Lyon East hosted their curriculum evenings. Both events were well attended and kudos to our staff and students for creating an evening that is welcoming to our current 8th graders and their families.
A point that was stressed at both schools was the importance of getting involved in school activities. There is a very positive correlation between being involved in school activities and academic success. In addition, being involved in school and building relationships with fellow students will enhance your overall school experience.
Whether it was watching little ones sign their “letters of intent” or seeing middle school students inspired by their high school peers, both events showcase the greatness that is SLCS. We are inspired by our current students and look forward to what the future holds with our new signees!
SLCS Community!

Kindergarten and Junior Kindergarten Enrollment is Open for 2023-24!
For any families who were unable to attend Kindergarten and Junior Kindergarten Welcome Event , enrollment information is now available on our website. When you have gathered all of the necessary documents, please begin the student enrollment packet online. The entire submission process can be done from home. The packet is easiest to complete on a laptop or other computer. We ask that you complete the enrollment packet by the beginning of April. Families that submit a completed enrollment packet will be on the email list to receive information about August orientation events. The online enrollment packet can be reached by visiting the district’s website at: https://tinyurl.com/JKKEnrollment If you need assistance, you may contact your school office or the district’s Pupil Services Department.
Please share this information with family members, friends, and neighbors who have an incoming Kindergarten or Junior Kindergarten student.
Junior Kindergarten Enrollment Deadline
If your child qualifies for Junior Kindergarten for 2023-24 and you are hoping to secure a spot, enrollment packets must be completed and submitted by Friday, February 17th at 4:00 PM. Space is limited in our Junior Kindergarten program and families who submit their enrollment packet late may not get a spot at one of their desired locations.
If you are hoping to enroll your student in Junior Kindergarten, please watch the Junior Kindergarten information video on our website about the program. If you still have questions remaining, an informational meeting will be held at Sayre Elementary School (23000 Valerie St, South Lyon) on the evening of Thursday, February 9, 2023 at 6:00 PM. This optional event is for adults only, not children and students, and is designed to answer any remaining questions families may have prior to the February 17th deadline for JK enrollment.

Winter Illnesses
Every winter as we all go inside, respiratory illnesses increase. Click this link to read an article from Johns Hopkins about the different types of respiratory illnesses, what they look like, and how to treat them. As a reminder, no student should be at school if they have had a fever, diarrhea or vomiting in the last 24 hours. Students who attend school while not feeling well take longer to recover because they are not getting the rest they need, plus their ability to learn and retain new things is diminished. We are all in this together so please keep your student home if they are sick so we can decrease the spread within our school buildings.
Early Mathematics Task Force Parent Survey
Representatives of the Michigan Association of Intermediate School Administrators (MAISA) Early Mathematics Task Force reached out to our ISD (Intermediate School District), Oakland Schools, asking for help distributing a survey intended to capture information about PreK - 5 mathematics education across Michigan. Oakland Schools has asked that we share the survey with families and staff. The information gathered from the survey will be used to inform the development of future early mathematics supports that are intentionally aligned to the needs of educators in Michigan. The survey is intended to be completed by parents and caregivers of students in preschool through grade 5. If this audience includes your family, you are invited to participate in this optional survey if you would like. We have been told the survey takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. The survey closes February 6th. Please click this link to visit the survey.
