The Nerve Center for All Things 8th Grade
A Growth Mindset
Student-Led Conferences
Starting tomorrow, your 8th grader will lead his or her conference highlighting in 10-15 minutes the successes, challenges, and areas where our guidance and assistance might be needed. Students will articulate a plan to overcome challenges and to develop mindfulness. I am looking forward to sharing this experience with you this week.
Please remember that this is just one of many opportunities to continue the conversation regarding our common goal: the success of our students. I am incredibly proud of the great effort that every single student is putting forth this year. It truly is a delight to be a part of their day!
Here are some guidelines to help your student prepare for his or her conferences: http://bit.ly/2kSYDqA
High School Admissions
This week, please complete the Google Form (survey) to help us more accurately respond to the Recommendation Form required by the Catholic high schools . The more information you provide us, the better we can represent your student and your family in the application process.
If your student will not be applying to a private high school, please send me an email indicating this. I will know then not to follow up with you if you do not complete this process. Thank you for your patience as you receive general information for those wishing to apply to private high schools.
Your students will be completing a survey soon (Resumé). If they ask for your help, please engage them in a conversation that will help them through reflective thought in formulating a response.
Your students should have begun the application process for the high schools they wish to be considered. If you haven't yet begun the process, now is the time to do so. You do not need to submit the application yet. However, it will serve you well if you begin the process to alleviate any stress associated with last minute applications. Please remember that Bellarmine, Mitty, and St. Francis applications are due December 15 and Notre Dame and Presentation applications are due in early-to-mid January. These applications include responses to essay prompts. You can only view the prompts if you begin the application process.
As you progress through the application process, you will be asked to enter the email address for the Required Recommendation Form. PLEASE enter this email address: hs.admit@stmaryslg.org. Please DO NOT enter your favorite teacher's email address. The form will be completed as a collaborative team. Your favorite teacher will have input on the Required Recommendation Form. If you wish to have your favorite teacher or another teacher complete an OPTIONAL recommendation LETTER, you may ask them to write one on your behalf and send it directly to the admissions office of the high school. THIS IS NOT REQUIRED. This is OPTIONAL!
I will have the Required Recommendation Form and Transcript Request Form for you when we meet to conference this week. I will need those signed in order to complete the application process for your student.
As with anything, please let me know if you have any questions.
Halloween Carnival
On October 31, your students will be "running" the Halloween Carnival. Planning has begun and student leaders are ready to roll. Mrs. Gabudao will supervise set up on October 30 beginning at 5:15 in Hofmann and on Monday, October 31 beginning at 7:30A. We will also need parents to help supervise booths, especially the Haunted House. Most importantly, we need your help to clean up and strike down on Monday. Please sign up using the Google volunteer sheet started by Mr. Clifford.
Proceeds of the Carnival will go towards the Juan Dircio Family Fund. Thank you for your generosity of time, treasure, and talent! We are grateful!
Field Trips
The Angel island Field Trip has been rescheduled to Friday, Nov. 10. Both the ferry company and the Parks service will be able to accommodate us on this day. We hope you can chaperone and drive. Anticipate the posting of a revised filed trip permission form. Unfortunately, we need to send out a new one with the correct date. Thank you for your patience.
Please ask your students to share the field trip permission form for our outreach trip to the Learning and Loving Education Center in Morgan Hill. Sra. Whalen and I have teamed up to have students practice speaking in Spanish and English with the women of the LLEC. Our students will conduct an interview about the women's immigration experience. They will be filming this interview to use to promote the Center's programs to garner support as a form of outreach. We will need drivers for this trip on October 26.
Below, you will find some links that might be of interest. As always, many thanks for your support and your willingness to partner in the growth of your precious children.
Please join us this week for morning assembly which will be led by the 8th grade class. More importantly, please join us for our student body mass on Thursday, Oct. 19 at 8:45. We will honor Sr. Betty as a true example of God's Witness.
Gratefully,
Cecile Mantecón
