The Roaring Twenties
The Roaring Twenties was an economic boom period that had a positive effect on the daily lives of many. New technologies such as the automobile, airplanes, radios, and new appliances improved people's lives. However, some such as sharecroppers, farmers, and underpaid factory workers were not able to enjoy this rising standard of living.
Prohibition
Prohibition was a complete ban of alcohol. Many people sold alcohol illegally. These people were called bootleggers. Wood alcohol was alcohol made by people that could make people blind or could kill them. Speakeasies were another cause of Prohibition. They were places where people would drink alcohol illegally.
Jazz
Jazz was the most popular form of music in the Roaring Twenties. Jazz began among most African Americans in New Orleans, Louisiana. Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Bessie Smith were famous jazz musicians. Jazz led to many new kinds of dances. Many dance halls help competitions to judge the best performers and new dance styles.
THE 19TH AMENDMENT
The 19th Amendment was passed giving all the women the right to vote. It was a result of the contributions women made during the Great War.
THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE
The Harlem Renaissance was a cultural movement in the United States that spanned the 1920s and 1930s. Many black artists moved to Harlem, New York, to use writing, music, and painting to share their ideas and feelings about life, about being African American, and about ending discrimination.
THE RADIO
Guglielmo Marconi was the inventer of the radio. He built it so ships could communicate. He didn't know it would be used for many other uses. David Sarnoff was the one who gave him the idea for using the radio for entertainment. Marconi didn't like the idea so David Sarnoff and Frank Conrad went behind his back and made the first radio station.
MASS MEDIA
How did mass media help businesses?
Mass media helped businesses by putting their adds on the radio. Many people would hear the add and go buy the product.
How did mass media help create a common American culture?
Everybody would buy the product that they heard about on the radio. And every day families would gather around and listen to the radio stations.
