Principal's Message
Tena koutou katoa
We remain in Level 2 so our protocols for Level 2 remain in place. I want to thank you again for following these protocols.
Thank you for supporting our Wig Friday last week. You were very generous and we raised $580 for Child Cancer. Thanks to Sheryl Todd and the Young Vinnies for organising this.
Next Wednesday is Catholic Schools Day. This is a day when all Catholic Schools in New Zealand celebrate our unique Catholic Character. The theme for National Catholic Schools Day 2021 is... “Catholic Schools: Faith. Excellence. Service.”. Children can wear mufti next Wednesday and there will be lots of different fun activities for children to be involved in.
Next term, on Tuesday 2nd November at 2.30pm, our staff, along with teachers from St Michael’s Rotorua, St Mary’s Putararu and Bishop Edward Gaines in Tokoroa are involved in Titiro Whakamuri kia haere whakamua Professional Development. We will need to finish school at 2.15pm on that Tuesday so I ask that you pick your child up at 2.15pm. If you require after school care you can ring Maryanne Roling from Glenholme Afterschool Care. Mary Anne’ s contact number is : 347 0709 or 0211 215599
Last week students took home a form regarding class placements for 2022. These forms need to be returned to the blue box in the school foyer by the last day of term. If you have a preschooler aged 4 years, and you intend to enrol him/her at St Mary’s, please fill in an enrolment form which you can pick up from the office. Places are filling quickly in our new entrant classes so if you would like a space for your child then you do need to enrol now.
I have had a number of parents who have children in Kakano asking me about baptism for their child.Today children in Kakano have taken a letter home outlining a Baptism programme that the parish will be starting next term. If you are interested, please return the response part of the letter to me by next Tuesday. If you have any questions please contact me.
Students are to start Term 4 in full summer uniform. Our Uniform Shop is open Mondays (8.30-9.00am), Wednesdays (2.30-3.00pm) & Fridays (8.30-9.00am) during term time. The girls’ summer dresses are currently only available from our school uniform shop.
Summer uniform is:
Boys - Grey drill shorts and a royal blue short sleeved polo shirt.
Girls - Blue check dress.
All students need a royal blue sunhat.
Feilding Red woollen school jersey
Black sandals for footwear (no socks to be worn with sandals).
We also sell school uniforms via our school website. You can order and pay online and pick up your uniform from the school reception after you have been notified by email that the uniform is ready to pick up. Hopefully this will be easier for those parents who find it difficult to get to our uniform shop.
Just to give you plenty of notice, Friday November 12th November we have planned to have a Teacher Only Day. School will be closed for the day but Glenholme Afterschool Care will be operating at St Mary’s that day.
Masses at St Michael’s and St Mary’s have resumed during weekdays and now Saturday Vigils and Sunday Mass. You will need to book in. See link and Mass times below in DRS message.
Have a great week.
Ngā mihi

Social Justice Week 2021
Social Justice Week highlights the Beatitudes with the theme of encounter and community. Classes will be learning about the Beatitudes and how they can be expressed in our lives and in our communities and our world.
National Catholic Schools Day- 29 September
“Catholic Schools: Faith. Excellence. Service.” Catholic Schools observe this celebration day with a variety of fun activities that engage all year levels. We have a great day planned for the 29th September, whichever alert level we are in, although more options if we are in alert level 1! What can be confirmed is that the students have a ‘uniform pass’ for the day, so students can wear mufti on the 29th September. Through these events, schools focus on the value a Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation. We also recognise the contributions of our Priests, Deacons, Sisters and the many volunteers in our Catholic community that help make a real difference.

ROAD CLOSURE
We wish to notify our road users that a temporary lane closure will be in place on Malfroy Road for the next four days (starting Wednesday 22 September) while contractors lay new stormwater piping under the road. Traffic management will be in place and motorists may experience delays, especially during peak periods. Please note this work is weather dependent.
It is hoped that contractors have both lanes open by afternoon peak traffic every day.
We thank everyone in advance for their patience and understanding while the work is carried out. This work is part of the major stormwater investment that has been underway in King Street.
ROTORUA LAKES COUNCIL
Way back in Weeks 1 and 2 we started to talk about the Zones of Regulations. We gave a brief description of the Zones of Regulation and talked about the Green Zone. Green Zone is the calm zone. People in the green zone can be described as calm, happy, content…
We can’t always be in the Green Zone, though. Sometimes, we end up in the Yellow Zone. The Yellow Zone is also used to describe a heightened state of alertness and intense emotions. Emotions in this zone include stress, frustration, anxiety, excitement, silliness and nervousness.
You could discuss:
what emotion they feel in the yellow zone (nervous, silly, frustrated…)
What clues do our faces and bodies give to show that we are in the Yellow zone
how they physically feel (some tight muscles, screwed up face, can’t sit still...)
what might they be doing (giggling, huffing and puffing...)
how do we calm down and get back in action (take a short walk, deep breaths, talk to someone, get a drink of water…)
