A Message from Mrs. Barnes
Julian Harris Elementary School
We had a great February! Our students participated in the Freckle Frenzy Math Challenge and did great! We love seeing the students excited about learning. We are also doing AR Prize Patrol each Monday and presenting the class with the most AR accuracy and participation from the previous week with balloons and prizes. So far only kindergarten and first grade classes have won. We are hoping to be able to present some of our upper grade classes with prizes soon! Encourage your child to read and take AR tests! Reading every day is important and is proven to increase academic success! Our third graders visited the Decatur Public Library and our 4th graders were able to go see the Huntsville Symphony perform. The Greenpower team participated in their first race for the year and our Math team participated in the district Math tournament. Both teams represented our school well and we are proud of their hard work. Texas Roadhouse provided their delicious rolls for classes with the best attendance. We appreciate their partnership with us! Our PTO also hosted our Valentines Dance in February and it was a huge success! Thank you to all who attended! Our teachers also had the opportunity to participate in professional development with other elementary school teachers in the district on the remote learning day. We heard Todd Whitaker, author of What Great Teachers Do Differently and other books, speak. It was a great day of learning for our faculty and staff.

Behavior Incentives
Our new behavior incentive is underway at JHES. Students start with a set number of points each day depending on their grade level and will be able to earn or lose points throughout the day based on their behavior choices. At the end of each month students who earn a certain amount of points will be rewarded. Our February Glow Party is this Friday, March 3rd. Our March incentive is an Easter Egg Hunt. Please encourage your child to be on his or her best behavior every day. If you would like to donate candy or prize filled eggs for the Easter Egg Hunt, please send those to the school no later than March 24th.
Counselor's Corner
Testing starts this month! Our students and teachers are working hard to make sure they are ready for the ACAP test. Help us encourage your child to pay attention and participate in class so he/she will be ready! We have seen a lot of growth on our STAR tests and are expecting the same results on ACAP. Check out my counseling site for resources and other information from the counseling department. I have added a Testing Resources page with information for parents and students to help with test preparation and test anxiety.
Thank you for all the participation in our Cherrydale cookie dough fundraiser. We had a great sale and raised over $5,000 to go towards a creativity lab and help with field day expenses. Frozen items and other items ordered on paper forms will be delivered to the school the week of March 20th. Please be ready to distribute the frozen items quickly to those that ordered. We do not have the exact day the items will be delivered, but we will need volunteers to help sort and distribute when they arrive. The magic show for students who sold 10 items or more will be the afternoon of March 7th.
School Rules
1. Respect the rights, property, and/or feelings of others.
2. Take pride in my school.
3. Follow the directions of all school personnel.
4. Show excellence in the effort required for success.
Seesaw
Please make sure you have connected with your child's teacher on Seesaw. This is the new way we are communicating with parents throughout the district.
Drop Off/Pick Up
Please be reminded of our drop-off and pick-up procedures to ensure our mornings and afternoons run smoothly. K, 4th, and 5th graders should be dropped off and picked up on the Auburn side of the school, and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders should be dropped off and picked up on the McNair side of the school. If you have multiple students please drop off and pick up on the side according to the youngest student's grade.
Attendance
Please make sure your child is at school on time every day unless he/she is sick. Attendance is important to ensure success in school. Remember, if your child is absent please send an excuse the day he/she returns to school to prevent truancy.
Reading at Home
Please make sure your child is reading every night at home. It is proven that at least 20 minutes of reading each day can greatly improve reading skills. Encourage your child to read AR books and take tests to on them to help improve fluency and comprehension.

Mrs. Barnes
My name is Angela Barnes and I am beyond excited and honored to be Julian Harris Elementary School principal. This will be my 35th year in education. I look forward to seeing all the smiling facing of students and adults eager to learn new things. I hope and pray that I can encourage others to be the best they can be and believe in themselves even on difficult days. There is always sunshine that comes with the rain. I begin every day by saying “it is going to be a great day!! If you believe you can do it you can!
