Instructional Coaches Corner: I CAN Statements and Formative Assessment Resources
I Noticed…
I noticed several teachers are displaying I CAN statements for the students to see. This gives the students focus and accountability for their learning. Use the I CAN statement in your whole group and small group lessons. One way for them to self reflect would be to add the I CAN statement at the bottom of the lesson or any formative assessment you give for that lesson. When I was walking around talking with teachers I noticed some awesome I CAN boards! Thank you Rachel, Dustin, Claire, and Jordan for letting me take pictures of yours.I Wonder…
I wonder what would happen if you referred to the I CAN statements as you walked around the room during work time and included these statements in discussions of their work. Do you think it would help students focus on the goal and the “why” behind each lesson?
According to The Art of Education, I CAN statements break down lofty objectives into learning targets students can read and understand. They cover specific learning for each lesson. I CAN statements, if they are used consistently and accurately, can help students become more responsible for their learning and more reflective of their own work. I CAN statements also easily transition into assessments and allow for students and teachers to have a better discussion of their work.

Let’s Recap
In a very user friendly format, teachers send prompts to students through written form and can include a video if they choose. Students then explain their thinking by creating a video response back to the teacher. This process is quick and requires little setup. The teacher can then view all responses through a video reel and provide individual feedback. Recap can be used by students and teachers to set learning goals, review lessons and new topics, establish classroom rapport, all while having fun. This electronic tool can be used K-12 and also provides additional options like polls and reminders for students to complete tasks. CLICK HERE
Exit Tickets
Hand out a short quiz or a few simple questions and students give them to you as they leave your class. You can also display the problem/question on the board and the students create their answer on a post-it which is turned in upon leaving class or finishing the block. Looking through the responses will give you the data needed to drive further instruction. Consider using this strategy as a bell ringer or opening activity, as well.

Kindergarten: Camp Kindergarten - Time to explore school on a camping adventure!
1st Grade: Animal Planet Safari - Go on a safari and learn all about animals!
2nd Grade: Out of this World - Time to blast off and learn about space!
3rd Grade: Pack Your Bags - Take a trip around the USA!
