First One to Travel All The Way Around The World

What He Discovered And Accomplished

  • In 1605 was his first sea travel

  • He was the first person that sailed around the world.

  • He discovered that the world was round

Early Life

  • Ferdinand Magellan was born in Portugal, either in the city of Porto or in Sabrosa, circa 1480.

  • His parents were members of the Portuguese nobility and after their deaths, Magellan became a page for the queen, at age 10.

  • He studied at Queen Leonora's School of Pages in Lisbon and spent his days poring over texts on cartography, astronomy, and celestial navigation—subjects that would serve him well in his later pursuits.

What Started Him First

In 1505, when Ferdinand Magellan was in his mid-20s, he joined a Portuguese fleet that was sailing to East Africa. By 1509, he found himself at the Battle of Diu, in which the Portuguese destroyed Egyptian ships in the Arabian Sea. Two years later, he explored Malacca, located in present-day Malaysia, and participated in the conquest of Malacca's port. It was there that he acquired a native servant he named Enrique.

Around The World

He left Spain in 1519 with five ships and about 260 men. At first he did not tell his men where they were going because he thought they would be too frightened to obey him

He Discovered That The World Was Not Flat

The Theory That The World Was Flat

The ancients had many novel ideas about the shape of the earth. The Babylonians thought the earth was hollow, to provide space for their underworld. The Egyptians thought the earth a square, (with four corners) with mountains at the edge supporting the vault of the sky.
