Knowing Our Students
We can know our students...
- by name (I often visit your schools and see you interact with individual students by name!)
- by their story (As we walk, you will often share with me a personal detail about an individual student that you know through your interactions with them)
- through their family
- through the languages they speak at school and at home
- hobbies and interests
- likes and dislikes
- strengths and challenge areas
- problem-solving ability (especially if you take time to watch them solve a CGI problem and talk to them about their thinking!)
- reading habits and ability (especially if you ask them about their reading)
- hopes and dreams
As we get into a season of state testing and data collection, I'm thinking about the quantitative and qualitative ways we know our students and can measure growth.

Know My Story/ Know Our Story -- 5 Facts about Us
Christy Anderson, Data Specialist
1. I married my college sweetheart. We meet through one of his best friends and my roommate. They broke up within a year, and we have been together for 32 years.
2. I have two children with my husband. They are the world to us. Kyle is studying Fire Sciences at Miramar College in San Diego and Katie is studying Elementary Education at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY.
3. My family owned and operated the Chevron Service Station on Birmingham Drive for over 32 years. I worked there for 17 years of my life. I am a true local to this area. So local that the Seaside Market shopping center used to be the Vons and Value Fair shopping center.
4. For anyone younger than 50, Barry Manilow is a famous early 80’s music artist and his songs include “Copacabana” and “Can’t Smile without You.” I was lucky enough to sing back-up for two encore songs with him in 1985 for one concert in San Diego. It was a sold out Sports Arena, and it was so fantastic!
5. From 1992-1994 I was a seat-filler at the Academy Awards. For wide camera angles of the audience, the seats in the front 25 rows must always be “Full,” so about 50 of us wait in the green room until a seat comes available. People only move during commercials, so there is a frenzy for about 3-4 minutes of people getting up, and seat fillers moving in. I stood right next to Tom Hanks on the evening he won Best Actor award in 1994.
