When is a Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebrated?
A Bar Mitzvah is celebrated when a jewish boy turns thirteen. A Bat Mitzvah is celebrated when a Jewish girl turns twelve. A family starts to plan the big event years before it will happen,so they get enough time to plan. It is celebrated each year because kids are turning twelve and thirteen everyday.

Why is it celebrated?
It is celebrated because this is the time when they have to study the Torah and then give a speech about it. They do this in front of family and friends. They celebrate it for girls at the age of twelve because that is when they are considered an adult. It's when females officially become a "Bat Mitzvah". Bar/Bat Mitzvah is celebrated because of their religious beliefs. The most important aspect of the Bat/Bar Mitzvah is the impact it will have on the young woman/man"s Jewish identity.

Is work permitted during the celebration/observation?
Families and friends do not work on this day. After the Bar/Bat Mitzvah they have an after party, kind of like a reception after the wedding. This party is about celebrating the religious implications of coming a Bar/Bat Mitzvah.

Gifts
Gifts are given at the reception, not at the service itself. Gifts given: nice pen set or college savings bond, but now a days kids are given presents that would be given to them at a 13th birthday party.
