NIS Weekly Update
November 13th, 2020
Celebrations
Northside students were honored to celebrate and recognize our veterans. Classroom activities included a Wounded Warrior project, writing letters and cards for veterans, and learning the history of Veterans Day. Northside also created a video to honor our veterans that is posted below.
World Kindness Day was celebrated today by our Northside students and staff. Students made kindness pledges, wrote positive encouragement to each other on the Grati-Social Station, and positive "post-it messages" were spread throughout the school!
A huge THANK YOU to our Friends of Northside group for all they do to benefit our students! Take a night off of cooking and support our school on November 16th at Chipotle in Janesville. Please be sure to tell the cashier and enjoy!

Spotlight on Literacy
Fourth graders are currently learning to write opinion pieces. They are using the example of a tree with a claim or thesis as the trunk, branches of support or reasons, and twigs and stems as their evidence. They have become experts at conferring with one another prior to putting their thoughts on paper and are on their way to becoming excellent writers.
Fifth grade is winding down with Book Clubs focusing on characters and theme. They are making book trailers on iMovie to support other readers with these book recommendations. They have also have been handing out book badges for each book they read as they work toward the 40 book challenge in class.
Sixth grade is starting to write an Elder Essay and created Heart Maps as a prewriting activity. Students will apply the skills they have learned crafting personal narratives as well as understanding the relationship between young and old.
