Principal's Message
We made it to the end of quarter two and semester one. I am immensely proud of how hard students have worked for the first half of the school year. Students have focused on learning, and our fantastic teaching staff has worked tirelessly with all of our PPS curriculum adoptions to make the materials exciting and engaging. I am grateful to our team; they make it look easy!
Please remember that there is no school tomorrow, January 27th, as teachers prepare grades for next week. Enjoy the three-day weekend.
Thank you to all the folks who came to Principal's Coffee this morning. I always look forward to taking the time to connect with you and chat. Our next one is on February 24th; we will meet in the cafeteria right after dismissal. I hope to see you!
From the principal's desk:
Chinese New Year Celebration at Duniway: Gung hay fat choy! We had a terrific week celebrating, in various ways, the Chinese New Year. Checkout the video below of our kindergarten parade through the hallway!
Report Cards: Your student's teacher will send report cards home with students, in backpacks, on Friday, February 3rd. Please look out for these.
Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT): We met with PBOT this morning during arrival to analyze the traffic patterns and consider how we could improve traffic flow around our school. PBOT noted the need for signage upgrades and parent accessibility to loading/unloading students, among other improvements. We will work on these updates this spring, and I will message the community as they come into place. We are excited about this work.
Choir: Thank you, Ms. Adams, for this wonderful morning choir concert! I loved hearing students sing "Starfish and Coffee" and "We Will Rock You." I've included a video below. Check it out.
New Student Connections at Duniway: Thank you, Ms. Jessy and Ms. Rachel, for the New Student Hot Cocoa today! Our outstanding counseling team has been engaging in these events this year, in line with our school's value of "connection." Students drank cocoa, completed a survey, and spent time chatting. All had a great time!
Summer Roof Project: The PPS Bond Project to renovate the roof of our primary school building was approved by the Historic Landmark Commission. PPS will hold a meeting in the next few months, most likely before a PTA meeting, to discuss the scope of the work. The project is an exciting one. We will get repairs to our auditorium roof, which will make that space fully functional again.
Thank you all for all you do to make Duniway a wonderful community for students to learn and grow. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me for any reason.
Best.
Philip
