Swanson Elementary October News
Home of the Squirrels!
Principal's Corner
Greetings Families,
First of all, thank you so much for your patience during our NO BUS days. For drop off in the morning you can use the Swanson South Entrance drop off OR the Swanson/Sherrod Bus Loop. Please pull forward if you use the Bus Loop and your child will be able to enter Swanson from the side door.
Pick up at the end of the day is in the Bus Loop if you have a child at Swanson and Sherrod. If you have siblings at Swanson ONLY they will be picked up on the South Entrance side with all Swanson student's. Our next NO BUS day will be Monday, October 4. https://www.matsuk12.us/buscancellations
Second, I would like to invite you to our Annual Title 1 ZOOM Meeting October 7th at 7:00 PM or on October 8th at 10:00 AM. I will explain our Title 1 plan, budget, and vision for Swanson. From this meeting I will be asking for Parent leaders to meet and add input on our Family Engagement activities and budgeting.
Third, now that our fall assessments are complete and we have met with all our teachers to review their classroom data you might ask yourself "What is MTSS in the MSBSD and how does it look at Swanson?" MTSS stands for Multi-Tiered System of Supports. This framework insures that all students needs are being met and personalized for them based on their classroom performance, benchmark data, and teacher observations. The MSBSD has a link (see below) with information and attached is our Swanson information letter. Please call me anytime with questions @ 861-5300.

Please fill out the meal applications at School Cafe.
Along with providing free or reduced meals for students this program also helps with:
• Waived college application fees
• Waived after-school program fees
• Access to specialized tutoring programs
• Lower internet costs
• Waived fees to take the ACT, SAT, and the Advanced Placement exams
• P-EBT (Pandemic-Electronic Benefits Transfer)
This program helps not only the students, but Swanson and the whole school district as well due to the state and federal dollars that are tied to these counts.
We can not thank you enough for taking the time to complete the free/reduced meal application. Swanson is currently at 45%. We must be at 50% or higher to qualify for Title 1 benefits next year. EVERY APPLICATION COUNTS!
Please help us continue to be a TITLE 1 SCHOOL so Swanson can continue providing services and programs to our students!

Safety Drills
We conduct safety drills several times throughout the year. Our Alice drill, is our intruder drill. Students may come home talking about a wolf drill. We read a book called I'm not Scared, I'm prepared! by Julia Cook. In the book the intruder is a wolf. Here is a great introductory video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRTIpMft_u8 This drill is completed twice a year, at the beginning of each semester. Also each semester we conduct earthquake drills and bomb threat drills.
October Drills include:
ALICE
Fire
Bomb Threat
Earthquake
